In the last few years through looking to buy GSD puppies I made friends with few nice breeders in Europe, and I asked them so many questions, some were silly, but I got many views on evaluation and judging the future of the puppies, here are some:
1. One breeder told me he could have a good idea about the conformation of a newly born puppy by holding it from under the arms and looking at it side view to see the back (top) line sloping and he can see if it is well conformed or not.
2. One breeder told me she marks all the puppies who have white (light color) spots on the paws and sells them as pets.
3. One told me she marks the puppies (sables) in regards to darkness, the darker when newly born will be the darkest when mature.
4. One breeder told me he watches the best puppy who finds the Mum nipple and that would make a good sniffer (tracker).
5. Another one would mark the biggest weight for body size.
6. One told me he checks for paws faults (splayed feet) etc at birth as they would be so clear then.

what is you input , especially those who had litters, do you do same or similar?

Good Points Ibrahim.

That's really an art and a science - "to be able to evaluate a new born puppy"

I heard even a new born pup will show the drive and intelligence in getting along with the others and getting to the food.
