Many here recall a post by Präger during February 2010 story about the death of a Beligian Malinois named "Yoris" from the result of an engagement with six (6) teenaged boys in Elizabethton, Tennessee. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/363166.html?pagen=1

The dog's K9 handler, Shane Darling, was away in Florida and the dog was secured at his home. Evidently; strong winds damaged the kennel pen that contained the dog and he escaped to a nearby field where he saw several boys dressed in protective gear and playing with  airsoft rifles. My guess is that the dog reverted to his memories from training and sensed that the situation was his to correct. This decision cost him his life as he was repeatedly shot with airsoft pellets and fatally stabbed after biting the boys repeatedly.

K9 Sergeant Yoris was honoured with a funeral attended by more than two-hundred (200) people. His performance during two (2) years with the police force was highly regarded. His K9 handler, Shane Darling, is still on the police force. The town recently held a fundraiser and Shane Darling has been assigned a new German Shepherd Dog known as "Ayk". http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/News/article.php?ID=76129

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation completed its work and the local District Attourney saw no reason to press charges against any of the boys. There are those questions that will never be answered and those who feel that the entire story has not been told. But, that is as it is. I presume the City of Elizabethton has settled with the families of the boys for the medical expenses incurred, and have read nothing further.

The cause of the escape was deemed to be a kennel pen that was damaged by high winds and sprung to the end that the dog escaped. I think we can all go away with the lesson that we must provide adequate shelter and security for our dogs.

Best Regards,
Bob-O

Like I said at the time, pretty shoddy kennel that can't withstand a bit of wind.  My kennel was subjected to extreme wind in the Columbia Gorge and a tornado here.  Was it aluminum foil?  Sure wish they media would have shown pics
of this "wind damaged kennel."

And again, when are the policies going to change and require these dogs to be kenneled inside or at a proper
facility?  How many dogs do the taxpayer have to foot the bill for when these handlers can't be bothered to
take proper care of them?  Never mind the distress and often deaths these dogs are subjected too.
"Perps" able to get close to the pen and beat and poison the dogs.  Brain dead cops that "forget" their "partners" and they
fry or freeze in the car?  Ad nauseum.
