For puppies imported from Germany especially those born during the rough winter time, they suffer from lack of vitamin D, owing to lack of sun which is a main source of this important vitamin for bones etc....

Vets recommended a multi vitamin veil with high concentration of vitamin D. I tried this & to my surprise & within 5 minutes if not less the puppy suffered from bad allergy i.e. swollen with red eyes & slack lips etc...

Have you ever experienced this & what is your recommendations.

I would say the reaction was to something in the multi-vitamin. I've never heard of giving them high levels of vitamin d. But if your vet is worried about it, why not give them a more natural source like the canned concentrated Goat's Milk which has Vitamin D in it or raw liver is also high in Vitamin D. But if you're feeding a high quality balanced diet and allowing the puppies proper exercise and adequate sunlight exposure, then you shouldn't need any supplements at all.

K9- Thanks for your post, the puppy is currently over 6 months, he is huge & super sized. The ears are still down & the gating is funny. The nerves are a bit week. So I think that natural feeding is insufficient & he needs some supplements. Plus milk causes diarrhea.

What do you mean by "natural feeding"?

by tarekallam on 16 May 2010 - 14:05

Sorry I mean food ,using no supplements.

So you think those symptoms indicate vitamin D deficiency? Weak nerve, ears down, etc?

I also think you're wrong about needing to supplement rather than feed properly....I would SO not use that vitamin again! Maybe it has soy in it or something; many dogs are allergic to soy.

I would go totally raw with him, get him back on a healthy track.

Vitamin D is toxic in high doses, I wish I could buy milk without it ,for myself.
I get plenty of sunshine so I don't need it and like to drink lots of milk.
It is a fat soluble vitamin.

I agree with nans gsd- put your pup on a raw diet. Just be sure it is a well-balanced raw diet: muscle meat, organ meat and bones. I also add a raw egg once or twice a week and yogurt or raw goats milk once or twice a week. If you are seriously interested you should join the yahoo raw feeding group where you will get a wealth of information. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/    The second best choice would be to supplement your pup's kibble diet with natural sources of vit D, as k9queen mentioned.
