Ok for those other newbies out there who are still wondering, I did find out that if you buy a dog who has only his SV registration, you must recieve a letter of sale from the previous owner. This you send to the SV in germany and get the dog put in your name there. Then you must apply for your beschienugung(sp?) through the SV which will then be sent by you to the AKC in order to achieve AKC papers on your import dog.
Hope this helps others who are in the same confusion I was!

Hi,
if you buy an SV dog from a breeder, the breeder has to send an "Eigentumswechsel" (change of owner)Bescheinigung to the SV. You always get a Bill of Sale when you buy an SV dog from a breeder - you get a copy, the breeder keeps a copy and another copy will be send to the SV head office. You have to send in the dogs papers with a copy of your Bill of Sale (to the SV head office). The SV head office matches your dog's papers with your Bill of Sale and the "Eigentumswechsel" Bescheinigung handed in by the breeder, and notes your name as owner in the dogs papers, which will then be send back to you. Now you can send the dog's papers to the AKC

Okay, cool.
The dog I bought was not sold to me by the breeder so we did not have a Eigentumswechsel. So I had to go the other way.
