GSDtravels

I got an email from a friend of mine in Downingtown, PA about a female GSD, 7 yo, great with kids.  In a scuffle for a piece of food, between two GSDs and a Yorkie, the Yorkie was injured and subsequently died.  The owner is threatening to kill the female GSD, holding her responsible.  His (the idiot's) mother has taken the dog and can only hold her for a few days before she is  turned over to a shelter.  She has been vetted and is UTD on all shots and current health check.  The four children are destroyed as this is/was their best friend.  Her temperament is being evaluated either today or tomorrow and will let you know the results.  From what I'm told, she is calm, good with children, was raised with cats and, aside from this disaster, has never had other issues with dogs.  I'm still waiting for pictures and will post some if/when I get them.  No info on color, lines, etc., this is all I have right now.  Her name is Heidi I'll be speaking to my friend today and will update as info becomes available.  Thanks!!

*The other thread got bogged down in feral cat rescue/release debate, so I'm reposting.

Wow this is really sad and seems to be a trend. My thread is about the same type of thing. People can't take responsability to for their own actions, blame the dog for what happens! Who is the one with the bigger brain? Never mind, in my case, it's not the answer most would get correct.

I hope you have more success finding this girl a home, than I have had so far.

Stories like that make me so angry!!  I wish this would have enfolded about a month earlier. There was this older very polite gentleman from the Pittsburgh area who was looking for an older retired girl (remember Lee's thread on our GSDWorld board?). I had talked to him and had considered letting him have one of my retired girls. But he "rescued" somebody else's dog and even called me back to tell me all about it. Nice man! He just wanted a companion to share his lonely home with!
Where in PA is Heidi located, which part? I will keep her in my mind if I get inquiries!!

Is it not a misdeamnor or a felony to kill a dog?  Jesus H C.  I really hate to see people using that terminology about dogs;  I do not care what they have done.  I know someone that shot an irish setter because he kept getting in their trash?  Really scarey.  Have you contacted your local rescue?

Thanks Chris, I appreciate that.  This dog is in the Downingtown area, eastern PA.  I am in Pittsburgh (south-west) and do remember that rescue request, too bad this comes late.

I spoke to my friend this morning and from what I'm told, the woman (owner) had to sign papers for the dog at the vet, and when the Heidi saw her, started to prance and whine.  She is confused and upset, understandably.  I guess she thought she was going home, breaks my heart.  Anyway, she is being housed at NAMSHA rescue temprorarily, about an hour north of Downingtown.  She will be evaluated either today or tomorrow but I'm expecting it will be positive as there have been no other issues in her 7 years, besides this HUMAN stupidity.  From what I'm told, she lived for the children, they were her heart and soul.  I'll keep you posted on any updates.

Sadly, it is not illegal to kill a dog in Pennsylvania. From what I understand, lawmakers thought that the high cost of euthanasia might deter some from humanely ending the suffering of injured animals, so it is legal to shoot your own dog if it is to humanely end suffering....I haven't read the law, don't know the specifics, but to me that leaves a lot of room for the cruel & thoughtless to twist the facts of any given circumstance. jackie harris

How on earth can they do this to the children, even if they don't care to think about the dog! Sometimes I think people use this type of thing as an excuse for something they've wanted for a long time. What the hell kind of person who has four children and two GSD's decides they need to get a third dog, and then they decide on a Yorkie, for crying out loud!

Vom Mager, thank you for the link!  Even if we find Heidi a home, that is a resource I'll keep on file.  Not too far from here.
