Ok... so the "Customs" thread had me really wondering about imported puppies and socialization. I've been busy all weekend so I am finally getting a chance to come on a post.

When I first got my first GSD three years ago, I was told about the mandatory in-home confinement, but was also told by people here how important it was to get my dog out and socialize him, especially since he was going to trained in Schutzhund, after he had already been given a few sets of  dapp shots. He was 8 weeks old when I got him.
I was paranoid I would get arrested and/or fined and also worried they would take my puppy for the remainder of the quarantine time,  if I got caught taking him for, say, a ride in the car. Or for a walk down the street.

I understand the need to keep our country safe from disease which the new pet could be carrying, (as well as keeping the pet safe from diseases/viruses here) but I also know how very important it is to socialize animals, before the average age they can receive a rabies shot, at around 16 weeks old. I personally do not get my dogs the rabies shot before that age.

When I came on here seeking advice, I was told by absolutely every person who replied that I  HAD to take him out and expose him to new sounds, sights and situations.

Anyway, here is the link from the Center for Disease Control
www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/dogs.html

So I am just curious as to what others do when they get a new puppy who is not fully vaccinated. If you don't want to post here, feel free to pm pr email me... Don;t worry any evidence will be immediately deleted LOL

Vaccinations
Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days
before entering the United States. This requirement does
not apply, however, to puppies less than three months of
age or to dogs originating or located for at least six
months in areas designated by the U.S. Public Health
Service as being rabies-free.
The following procedures pertain to dogs arriving from
areas that are not free of rabies:
■ A valid rabies vaccination certificate should accompany
the animal. This certificate should be in English or
be accompanied by a translation. It should identify the
animal, the dates of vaccination and expiration, and be
signed by a licensed veterinarian. If no expiration date
is specified, the certificate is acceptable if the date of
vaccination is no more than 12 months before the date
of arrival.
■ If a vaccination has not been performed, or if the certificate
is not valid, the animal may be admitted if it is
confined immediately upon arrival at a place of the
owner’s choosing. The dog must be vaccinated within
four days after arrival at the final destination, but no
more than 10 days after arrival at the port of entry. The
animal must remain in confinement for at least 30 days
after being vaccinated.
■ If the vaccination was performed less than 30 days before
arrival, the animal may be admitted but must be confined
at a place of the owner’s choosing until at least 30
days have passed since the vaccination.
■ Young puppies must be confined at a place of the owner’s
choosing until they are three months old, then they must
be vaccinated. They must remain in confinement for 30
days after the vaccination.
Dogs that arrive in Hawaii or Guam, both of which are
free of rabies, are subject to locally imposed quarantine
requirements, in addition to other Public Health Service
requirements listed above that may apply.

all of that being said..........

When we imported Hero he was 12 weeks.

We had lots of friends come over to visit and meet the new puppy. We also set up stuff in the backyard for him to climb on.

He came out OK

Has anyone ever imported a puppy where they actually came and checked up on it?

Someone on the other thread said they got a phone call. I never have.
If anyone ever stopped by my house I wasn't home and they didn't leave a notice (or the dog ate it) hehe...

As you know I took Ike everywhere as soon as he got home. Obviously no heavily trafficked doggie areas like parks and petsmart and I did not take him on any prolonged neighborhood walks but I did take him to schH field right away and I remember we went to Lowes and Home Depot A LOT ... daily.  We also hung out around gas stations a lot. There was one right by my house and I used to take him to there to feed him his meals haha.

Whenever I had got a pup it went everywhere with me.It would go to work with me(worked where i could bring them with) I took them to the SchH club i was a part of and trials so they could meet people and get use to people and be social.I also would bring them to my brothers so the kids could play with them. The more you do with them and the more places you take them the better.IMPO

LOL Moons!!! hehehe... pillows too right? I just make sure I stuff the tag end in the pillowcase first, in case of any surprise inspections.
Thanks for the replies and also to everyone who Pm'd me. It was nice to hear some excellent advice.

Stacy
I cannot see that any harm will come about if you say take the Puppy into the Clubhouse at the ScH club you do not need to socalise it with older strange  dogs at  that age, and i for one would never do that anyway, but no harm if people interact with it and they all love a puppy you only have to go by the reaction of the guys on this forum when they see a new puppy, As for Dog  Parks  they do not have those in Belgium and if they did i would not use them.
My Dogs are never Interact with strange dogs out walking, They are always on a leash by my side
There is no open ground where we can allow them to run except opposite the Supermarket so if i get there at before 6 in the Morning i can let her loose to run and chase her Ball do a sit and down ,
Other Dogs Bark at Izzy if they pass us, but she just gives them a glance and carries on that is the reaction i want from her nothing else, steady nerves and indifference to other Dogs close by her that is what i like to see
So yes, take your Puppy to the Dog Club to show her off it cannot hurt anything Let it mooch about inside loose and greet the members
