I've been contacted through a friend by a woman who owns a four month old female GSD, bought from a pet store, sounds like she has some fear aggression issues, possibly weak nerves. She lunges at people/dogs. The owner does want to try to make it work, I told her she is in for a lot of work and training expense. She lives at Fort Dix, NJ. Can anyone recommend a trainer with a proven reputation for success with this kind of dog in her area?

Poor pup, she can't have had it long. How can it have behaviour issues, it is a baby and lived in cages most likely. I think the owner needs major rehabilitation. I don't think at this age it has to be expensive or long, just correct. IMHO

Beetree, a four month pup lunging aggressively at people and dogs is not normal. Likely she is poorly bred to begin with, and was not given any early stimulation or socialization prior to her leaving the pet store. While at such a young age it can certainly still be worked with, taking a cheap petsmart or park district class isn't going to cut it. She needs to work with an experienced trainer regularly until the dog is mature and not showing signs of instability. They have a baby, who the puppy is fine with, but what happens down the road when their child starts having friends come to the door?  I have given her some tips, but without seeing the dog in person it will only get her so far. She needs to work with a trainer weekly for at least a few months, and sadly we dog trainers cannot work for free, we have to eat, too.

Hey Kelly...I think there is a guy in NJ that is on here although I haven't seen him post for a while but he went by Border11 if I am not mistaken. I met him  at the seminar with Hans of Alpine Safety. He knew alot and is kinda like us in the training methods. Hope that helps and hope he can help.

KC,  What information have you obtained from the Owner regarding her training/interaction with, and since obtaining the puppy?  (Not what the puppy is doing now, but what the Owner has been doing previously)???

I see the majority of problem behaviour as symtoms of the problem.

Thanks Lauren, I'll see if I can contact him.

As I cannot see the dog firsthand, I would not assume to know why the dog is doing anything, nor would I expect an inexperienced pet owner to correctly assess the source of the behavior. Getting dog training advice over a message board or via email is silly. She needs a trainer to evaluate the dog, in person. I would happily help her were I not halfway across the country.
