Has anyone purchased any of these books. If so, what are they like and are they a good learning tool?

by SitasMom on 22 April 2010 - 17:04

Yea, sitsamom, I know I just ordered one, but was looking for opinions from others. Regardless I think we probably can learn from it, but was just wondering. Do they hold togther good and what was the quality of the book over all. Is it a hardcover book or what?

I have several years of them, and I love them. I got behind and and need to catch up on a few years, but they were invaluable to me when I was trying to learn about lines.

I own one (2008) and have borrowed six others from this decade from a friend. This book is worth every cent to me. Yes it is hardcover, full color. They have pictures of probably 75-80% of the dogs that were shown and recieved a show placing. The one downfall is, that dogs who placed towards the back often do not have pictures (there may be generic pictures on the page, but not of the specific dogs). I found it very useful when learning about the breed standard, to put words with pictures, particularly the VA  and top V dogs, to read their critiques and look at the pictures and put two and two together (ie. what it looks like when a dog has a short, steep, long croup etc). It was also very helpful to compare individual dogs, and to look at examples of the males' progeny, and see how they are being placed (gives me a rough idea of how the dog's producing, seeing as I'm not in Germany and often don't see any of  their offspring in person). Yes, its also good for learning about lines! Anyhow, definitely worth it.

I was more familiar with American Blood lines, which I no longer breed from or to.  Nothing against anyone who breeds or likes the American lines, but at this time, I realize that for me the German program works better for me.  About one and one half years ago, I decided to purchase my first Urma Books (2002-2008) and have learned a lot of invaluable information from them.  They are hard covered and very well put together and are an invaluable source for anyone who is even casually interested in the European show bloodlines.  Although they are not generally cheap, I noticed a sale on 2008 and earlier editions advertised on this website earlier today.  I will be buying my 2009 edition as soon as it comes onto the market.
