AandA

See photo below & note the two small red 'splits' in 'ol Nelson nostrils.

They come and go but never seem to totally heal. You may also be able to see the padded top bit of his nose is a little dry & leathery. It doesn't seem to bother him on a day to day basis but occasionaly if it gets knocked in just the right place he'll let out a little yelp so it does hurt.

Any ideas as to what they may be or how to ease them?

Changed picture for a smaller one so it loads up quicker.

Aww bless him, it must be sensitive there. Have you checked it out with a vet to see if there is an underlying cause for the dryness of his nose?.

The only thing I could suggest to help with the dryness (if there isn't a medical reason for this) would be vaseline as it helps to protect the skin from effects of weather and exposure and will protect if from the drying elements.

Sorry I can't offer any advice other than this. I hope his nose heals up soon.

Poor baby!!!  I was going to suggest Vaseline as well.  Definately take him to the vet to see what is going on here.

My female has had the exact same type split but just on the left nostil for over 3 years in the exact same place and it will never heal in my experience.
She is a very strong drive female, always ready to go. Everytime it seems to "calm down" and close up a little she bops it either pushing open a door when we are ready to go somewhere or just to go out and play ball or just being over anxious and eager waiting at the door. Yes, I know the corrections and she knows she must sit, wait and focus until I allow her out the door, but as soon as I get my boots or keys or the travel water bottle from the frig, she knows and she is at the door testing it. She is also trained to open gates and bring the food bowls to the kitchen after meals and no matter what, in her eagerness she pops it (nose) back open again over and over.
In my dogs case I don't believe it to be dryness, just eagerness.
If you do find something that soothes the splits I would love to hear of it.

Tried the vets & got the usual of not knowing what it was and try a weeks course of antibiotics. £45 pounds later & no difference. The only thing I was worried about vaseline was is it ok for the dog to ingest? Cus as soon as I put it on he's gonna lick it straight off.

Nelson doesn't use his nose against doors etc but like OB's he's always (seriously) eager for his walks and spends a good deal of the time with his nose to the ground. He's had these off & on for a good year and they do seem to get better when it's warmer so wondered if its winter/white nose.

I do remember somebody on here mentioned that cattle udder cream is good so I may try him with a little of that.

I would try mineral oil, put it on and rub it in a little; then put it on again.  Also it could be from the sun, possibly try some non-toxic SPF like Water Babies (made for babies skin) and let that soak in real good;  just be sure it is safe if they ingest it as of course he will lick his nose.

AandA---My young male had major surgery last year.  The larger incision healed nicely.  The minor incision was a constant battle to close. I finally got lucky when applied a 'granulation gel'.  Ask your vet.......he should know.  If you need a brand name, I'll call my vet.  Vaseline won't do it----it's just a barrier, and Neosporin was useless.  Deep cracks like that are probably painful.

LMH - that sounds like just the thing because as you say it needs something to help heal the crack rather than just a barrier cream.

I'm going to pop into the vets on my way home tonight but it might still be good to get a brand name - no rush for it though.

Thanks,

My vet said possible discoid lupus. My Blitz has had it for about 2 1/2 yrs.  I was applying Vitamin E on it everyday and it seemed to help.  But it is a pain to poke a hole in the gel tabs and try and apply it, then the other dogs wnt to lick it off.  I was at the vets last week and spoke to another doctor there and she said try lanolin (I guess mothers use it while breat feeding if they get irritated nipples), the other dogs try to lick this off too but not as much. She also said to try for 6 weeks 500 mg of Niacinamide (not Niacin) per day, we have not started this yet because I want to be with him for 24 hrs to see if there is any side effects.  Good luck.
