not sure if anyone else has heard about this

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Fipronil is an ingredient in most topical flea treatments.
Read it and weep, because it makes me cry to think that people are putting this on the animals they love.

http://www.pesticid e.org/fipronil. pdf

Excerpts -
In tests with laboratory animals, fipronil caused aggressive behavior, damaged kidneys, and “drastic alterations in
thyroid function.” The fipronil-containing product Frontline caused changes in the levels of sex hormones.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies fipronil as a carcinogen because exposure to fipronil caused
benign and malignant thyroid tumors in laboratory animals.
One of fipronil’s breakdown products is ten times more toxic than fipronil itself.
People can be exposed to fipronil when they pet an animal that has received a flea treatment. Fipronil persists for at
least 56 days on pets.

Hay-soos. Good to know. Practically all that's left is DE.

Holy crap.  What's DE?  In Alaska we didn't have to worry about fleas, but now that we're back in the midwest I'm not sure what to use.  I don't want to expose my dog or my kids to hazardous chemicals if I can avoid it.

The statement above that the EPA considers fipronil a carcinogen is not exactly correct. It is considered by the EPA as a Class C chemical, which means it is considered a POSSIBLE human carcinogen because mice were fed huge amounts of it.

It is critical to understand what one reads and know how things are actually classified, and why. As far as I know, it is NOT listed by any other agency in any way as a carcinogen in any classification.

To read a fact sheet on the chemical see the link below:

If you have not had a lot of toxicology, some of the information may not mean much.

In looking at some information today I also noted that the EPA is aware of some counterfeit flea and tick products being sold in the United States. For further information, dated 9/09, check out this link.

YoungLiving Essential Oils

this stuff works for me........its not cheap, but I feel good using it.

FLEAS AND OTHER PARASITES:
Single oils: Lemongrass, tea tree, eucalyptus (all types), citronella,
and peppermint.

A few drops of Di-Gize and of lemongrass to Animal Scents
shampoo, and use to shampoo as usuall. Oils repel fleas and other
external parasites.

Wash blankets with oils added to the wash during
the rinse cycle. Also, place 1-2 drops of lemongrass on collar to help
eliminate fleas.

For internal parasites, daily rub Di-Gize on the pads (bottom) of the
feet. Many people have reported that they have seen the parasites
eliminated from the animal within days after starting this procedure.
