strongid T - Page 1

Does anyone know if you NEED a perscription for stongid T.  I use it to worm my dogs and would like to get it in larger quantity and not at such a steep mark up as from the vet office.  Or is there a compairable product on the market?

It would appear that it is available in quantity but you do need a prescription.  I've always just uses Nemex-2 for puppies and it works fine.  I don't worry about it with adult dogs because they're on Sentinel which controls the same parasites that Strongid T does.

     Windy, I wouldn't use that on puppies, (not that you said that was what you was using it on). I go with Ivermectin on the older dogs, and I also use the Nemex on pups and small breed dogs.
     I buy from Omaha vaccine. I myself swear by the Ivermectin with prazinqual(sp), it treats all worms!!!!!Just get the right dosage, if not from a vet, there is a beagle site that breaks it right down for you. Google it!!!

You may be right.  While I found a clause that said, "Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian," it doesn't specifically state that a prescription is required and I have found some sites that list it as available over the counter.
         

I would not use  that product.

Note:  Another warning on Television last night locally about the Drops people are using on the backs of dogs for Flea control.
Vets are squirming over this as a big money making part of their front office is selling you Frontline, etc. There has always been a danger but it seems we paid no attention but now the FDA is getting involved and making these companies change the products..

Around the house, in flowerbeds, barns and in feed for horses, etc.(FOOD GRADE)

Thats not a prescription item its marketed under different labels and for different animals  pryan 50 is the same thing ,The problem with nemex is its often too weak its okay for rounds I guess  ,I would certainly not use it for hooks if you have a problem with that  nemex and strongid are the same ingredient just different strengths, If you have any serious parasite problem its better to use panacur ,Monthly ivomec will do the same thing as strongid and more!

Nemex is Pyrantel Pamoate (generic name) If it's sold as a dog wormer, it's Rx only. If it's sold / packaged as a horse wormer, you can buy over the counter, but you have to reduce it to the right strength, which is a pain in the ass, but can be done. It works, just the same. In adults you may be able to use it straight from the tube, but maybe a tiny bit as large as a mustard seed. You have to do the math and the work of properly reducing it into the right emulsion and dosage. I have done this, using a lab flask and bar / drink mixer.

The pet vets have these things pretty well locked up so they make money on it.. anything prescription (and everything is). Livestock lobbies have protected the right of their constituents and the industry to provide routine self-help on vaccinations, worming, de-horning and other practices which a veterinarian MIGHT do but which would be not economical for ranchers.

www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx strongid t is routinly used in dogs its is 11 times stronger than nemex which is pretty useless except for rounds , strongid usually doses at 1cc per 10 lbs of puppy, nemex is much higher volume and adds more risk of choking I think, if you have to give 2,5 cc per 5 lbs or whatever it is thats way too much volume for a small puppy to swallow mine anyway

don't care for nemex or the cheaper stuff. every pup I've bought who was given nemex came home with me wormy.

I've always used strongid T and panacur.  I start strongid T at 2 weeks and do once a week till they leave.  I do a 3 day round of panacur at 6 weeks too.
