Bear carlo

Hi all,
I am a new gsd owner. I can see there are some very knowledgeable people on this site so I'm just asking for some useful info really. I have a 5 month old boy, who is a bit of a devil. He goes to training classes and walks daily buts still his a handful. I understand the dogs are going to be as they are high energy and I've discussed the food his on (pro plan for puppies) with Purina reps at crufts so I'm hoping everything I'm doing for him is in his best interests.

Now for my real point. I have no intention of ever showing my little boy but I'm a little concerned with all the talk about straight and banana backs on this site. I have placed a picture on this site and was wondering if people could comment on if he looks ok. I appreciate there are two different views but I'm only concerned about his health and wellbeing not about if people like the way he looks.
He has been to the vets for checks, jabs etc etc and he has never said anything about his shape.

Oh he is five months and I'm thinking of getting another. I've been advised that a girl would be better than another boy as they will get on better, is that so? and is now the right age for Bear to have a sister?

Thanks in advance

Harry.

No banana back there!

Congratulations on your nice puppy.  You're going to have so much fun with him.  He's a handful and a little devil because he's INTELLIGENT.  There's an old saying that if a puppy never does you any harm he'll never do you any good.  Meaning that if he's a lively little puppy, always mischievous and curious and yes, getting into trouble, when he's grown AND TRAINED, he's going to be a wonderful, brilliant companion and a true delight.  If he's flat and not curious and a goody-two-shoes at too young of an age, he won't amount to much in the end.

People on here may bash Purina to you, but Pro Plan is a good food.  Here in the States they have a Purina Selects Puppy that is also a good food.

He's standing a little under himself (sickle hocked) in the back, but that might just be this particular photo.  Sometimes puppies stand goofy.  Otherwise I think he's quite attractive.  Make sure you keep him on the lean side and don't let him get fat!

Welcome to the board, nice pup.  Please resize your picture down to about 600 so that it will be easier to see.

I'd happily resize. Would you mind PMing me to advise how to?

Thanks,

Congratulations!!  I hope that you have many years of joy and companionship with him!   I "think" you are in England?   The Purina there may be very different than the Purina here.   I know I was stunned at how much better the Pedigree in Europe was, compared to the US--completely different formulation.
Handsome boy!!   Let him grow up a bit, and get him settled and trained, before getting another puppy.  Having two pups at the same time is not like having twins--it's  more like being Octomom!

Nice puppy. However this pic of him is not the best to critque with. The best angle would be to take a side view of him, not from above as this one is. I am not sure how Tess could see that he is not banana back or that he is sickle hock. Of course she may be experienced enough to know when its there when looking from this angle. However in my opinion, he does not look sickle hocked as you can tell if a puppy is sickle hocked when in motion not standing still. Sickle hocked is when the hock does not open up when the back leg is at its most extened point in the rear when gaiting. I've seen puppies standing on more of the hock and yet were not sickle hocked when gaiting. But thats my opinion.. I don't know everything, but I do know that the term sickle hock is in relations to describe a movement of the rear legs in motion...

Try to get side views of your boy then you will get more comments on your nice puppy.

Thank you all for the feedback so far. I know these are not the best pictures at all. However, I will get some uploaded asap that maybe better to look at.

I see you deleted the pic, but the new one didn't come through.  Go back to "owner edit" and just put it up the same way you did the first time.  You should get screen with boxes for "width" and "height".  Put 600 in the width box and the height will fill in.  Just hit okay and the pic should appear.  If you have any trouble, send me a PM.

Okay, I see it now.  Second thing, when posting multiple pics, hit "enter" after each appears on your screen, or they go to the side and screw it up again!  As clearly seen above, LOL.  If you hit enter between them, they stack below each other and are easier to view.  It takes some time to get used to using the functions here, it just takes patience.  We will also be patient because we LOVE seeing puppy pics!  And it's always fun to see the excitement of a new addict!  Welcome aboard!
