I am getting a new pup next week,  bred to work. I do NOT want to "ruin" her...my question, are there any videos that can help me start with basics in what to do and not to do? I haven't trained for Schutzhund before, and am interested in trying it with this pup. She is only 8 weeks old. I just want to start her right until she is old enough to actually start club work. Nearest club to me is 2 hours. I know videos are all over, but wanted to ask the "experts" which might be the best to get first???

Thanks in advance!

Janie,

Here are a few resources I think you will find very helpful. I will try and get some more videos added to the list.

I am not an expert, but my novice opinion is that if you are not sure what to do, it's better to WAIT and get good advice from a great training helper than do it wrong and have to backtrack later on (and I say that because I did make several mistakes with my dog, in my opinion, and when I do it again I will definitely use the "less is more" mentality, "quality, not quantity").  Just let your puppy be a puppy but make sure she thinks she is The Shit in everything she does.  Build her confidence and her bond with you.  Work on getting her to want to always play and engage WITH you, anywhere anytime.  What and how much socialization you do is up to you but make sure you are in control of your dog's program so that she doesn't have any bad experiences or gets too much pressure from any person or dog.  I think introducing scent pads for tracking is fairly simple to do by yourself.  For protection and obedience, maybe just hold off until you can start training with your club.
