i have a six month old GSD and he hasnt started hiking his leg yet. Is this normal? when do most dogs start hiking? Any answers will be very helpful. Thanks!

Very normal

Don't worry about it.

I have seen males as old as 2 yrs old still everyonce in a while not lift leg, and some still squat.

I think for some males it is a learned behavior, if they live with or are kenneled near other males they pick it up sooner. My male started lifting his leg early and hasn't put it down since. He never misses an opportunity to mark. Give it time he'll get it.

You don't want him to start hiking his leg, when he does he will do his business all over the house. Are you prepared for all of the cleaning?

I've never had a male mark in my house (well, a terrier, by never a GSD). My boy marks everything outside but he has never even thought about doing it inside.

My male did not lift his leg until about 3 months ago. He is 2 1/2. He is completely house trained and would never do it in the house. The only time I would ever worry about that is if another male lifted his leg in the house, then my boy would for sure cover that up.

My male started lifting his leg consistently when he turned 4, and he has NEVER, EVER marked in my house.

My male will mark everything in sight when he is outdoors, but will not do it in my house. It's called housebreaking.
