Stuffed Toy Warning

Just got this and I know many pick up stuffed toys at thrift shops, for
dog toys. You might want to re-think that.

Quote:

Last night at agility class, a vet, who is a fellow agility student was
telling us about a case she
had this week. The dog ate a child's teddy bear and was very sick. When
she opened the
dog up to remove what she thought was an intestinal obstruction she found
a huge gelatin
type mess inside and the dogs’ intestines were black and the tissue dead.
The dog will die no
surgery can fix him up there was no living intestine left from stomach to
colon.

This was not an obstruction. .... so she called the manufacturer of the
Teddy Bear on a quest
to find out what the gel was and what killed the dog. Turns out the
stuffing in children's toys
contains ingredients for flame retardants and mite control! It is designed
to become a gel. It is highly toxic.
Now you would think a child's toy would be safe because
it is for children, but
they don't expect a child to eat the stuffing of the toys... huummmm that
seems a bit scary
too. But we all know dogs demolish stuffed toys.

So do not give or buy your dog any children's stuffed animals... some
people get them at
goodwill etc. The vet will be posting a warning and story and I will send
any other facts as
needed and as I learn more. Maybe some children's toys do not have this
ingredient, but
better to be safe then sorry. So meanwhile, make sure all your dog toys
are for dogs. Please
pass this on... it is a horrible death she described and one that can be
avoided.

Are you sure the dogs toys are safe, anybody looking into this. My Mom's rottie has a basket full of them. She picks out which one she wants to paly with and she even puts them away before she goes to bed. she is not distructive. I still would not want her to have them.

That is BS about the kids not tearing them up. How many times have we put an ear back on?

Gosh, that's terrible. Poor dog and owner. They must be devastated. Mine don't have stuffed toys as they wouldnt last 2 minutes, but it's good to know the risks and dangers of what can happen, so people can be aware. Thanks for sharing the information.

Thanks for sharing! I buy my dogs stuffed animals all the time (for dogs.) I try to make sure they don't swallow any of the stuffing and throw them in the trash when they are "dead" but now I am not so sure I want them to have any at all.  :-(

I always thought they were a waste of money, too easily destroyed.  I'd rather buy a sturdy toy like a Jolly Ball or some sort of tug.  My Aunt buys stuffed toys for her dogs at the Dollar Store and I told her I had a bad feeling about it, she still doesn't listen.  I'll be telling her about this and maybe she'll change her mind.  Thanks Steph!

They ARE a waste of money :-) Galan LOVES his Kong the most, but all three of the girls love the stuffed animals. Especially Indi and Isolina...  Not to hijack the thread but the rawhide bones my ex husband's horrid mother used to give to her mini schnauzers, gave me that same "bad feeling" that  that you get.  When I mentioned it I got the "Listen Missy I've been doing this for 30 years...."
Within a year of our talk, she lost an 8 year old dog from an obstruction :-( I felt bad because he was a fun little dog.

I have given  baby puppies stuffed toys, just because it takes them longer to destroy them.   My old male LOVED my teddy Bear slippers as a puppy.  The heads on the slippers were as big, or bigger, than his little 9-12 week old head.  He wrestled with them, humped them, whizzed on them, and wrestled them some more.  Once he finally tore one head off, he got the other slipper to work on.   I never even considered anything like flame retardant....foolish of me in retrospect, now.   It's just a good thing I only let him have them when I was there to see that he didn't ingest the stuffing.  Still...... we may have just lucked out.

Thanks for the info Steph!!

You know, I find pooped out bits of fiberfill from one end of my back yard to the other....there's nothing like fluffy white turds. It never hurt anybody....although I will certainly stop using stuffies now. The second you know better, you're jinxed.

It is unwise to ever give a dog a toy meant for a human child. Besides the issue of eating it and ending up with an impacted GI tract, many toys these days contain small batteries that could kill a dog. If you must give a dog a toy, you should be looking at dog toys and choosing wisely. Even many dog toys are unsafe. In any case, as far as I am concerned, no dogs get toys of any kind, including kongs or tugs made well, unless I am directly supervising them. And it is also ALWAYS wise to check out stuff like this that is forwarded from someone. Too many people don't do their homework and the internet continuously circulates bunk.....
