I'm looking to get a bark collar for 18mo GSD.

I'm thinking between Dogtra YS500 No Bark Collar and SportDOG Rechargeable NoBark 10R Bark Control Collar.

She only barks at night to get out of outdoor kennel. I have no option to let her bark it out at 11:30 pm because of my neighbors. She's not used to spending a night in an outdoor kennel and she figured out the way to make me get her out of there. So I would be using the collar only later in the night. I'm not sure if I would have to keep it on her for half an hour or leave it on till morning.

Anybody have opinion which model is better?

I have used the Dogstra and it had no effect on my male.  Strong dogs will bark through it.  In fact, the heathen eve "figured" out that it took a certain amount of time to reset,  once the shock was triggered and he barked his fool head off during that period.

I have also used the Tritronics and liked it, because it has an odometer to show you how many times it was activated by barking.

BOTH  ran on batteries and wore out after a few years, btw.

I know have a Dogstra that is rechargeable, as well as a Cabelas's brand (not sure if that is SportDog or not).  I like the idea of them being rechargeable.  Plus, the Cabalas brand has a setting that is supposed to automatically adjust the level to the dog's temperament.  It is also supposed to tell how many times it was activated, but damn if I can find that function.  It is also supposed to only react to both active barking by the dog wearing the collar, as well as the motion.

BUT,  once again, the male is barking through the Dogstra.   The Cabelas collar clearly zaps him, but he refuses to shut up.  It is supposed to adjust the stimulation level automatically, until the point that shuts the dog up.  Apparently, it does not go up that high for my male.

My bark collars are the Dogtra and set on a 3 or 4 level gets plenty of attention from my dogs who want to bark. The best solution is to crate the dog in the house, but if you decide to leave her out, putting a bark collar on at times where she learns what it is about will keep her quiet at night. You will have to leave it on for the night as she will soon figure it out that she does not get corrected when it is not being worn. Also, do NOT leave it on for more than one night and if she is going to get wet, or sweats too much, be prepared for sores developing on her skin after a few hours wear. This will occur regardless of brand. Dogtra has longer contact points, but I have never needed them.

I use the Dogtra YS500, as no other collar worked at all. I have one set at 5 and the other set at 7, unfortunately i have very stubborn females! :)

It wood be fabulous if the bark collars had a remote controller like the regular electric collars because than you could turn it off from a distance and than you could get your dog from the kennel.

My dog gets all excited and wines and barks when I approach and than associates the correction bark collar shock with me approaching.

Its a drag.

Does anyone know if theres a function like that -remote??

I have a dogtra bark collar that is rechargable.  At first I loved it, she got to the point of just coming up and laying down on the back porch cause she knew she could not trust herself to be out and about and not bark.   I liked it until she figured out how to shake it/work it to the side to get out of the shock.  She has a very high pain threashold so I set it about 4, but more importantly, she is a very high drive dog so she is willing to put up with discomfort, but at 4 it still gets her attention.  So I wonder if Mystere's was not working properly.  I put it on her quite tight, as tight as reasonable, but after awhile she figured out how to manipulate it.  Some will say that if you put it on tight, prongs dug in, they cannot work it to the side.  This was not my experience.  I started inter-using it with my dogtra E-collar and between the two, she gets the message.  She had to learn that working it to the side would not eliminate the consequences.

P.S. Thanks for reminding me to recharge both of them.  They need to be recharged once a month, but I never remember to.  I have not used Sport dog, but those that I know do like the E-collars as well.  Personally I think most reputable componies make a good product.   If you are not happy with Dogtra I know they have an excellent return policy.  They have gone out of their way to replace manuals etc.

I taught my girl "Quiet" right from the beginning in her crate...Never have to think about using a bark collar...The command does the trick.:-)

I tied the quiet command, did not work at all....wish it had. Not only that one of my girls breaks out of the crate and has broken a tooth in the process, she is in a heavy duty steel crate now, but I have caught her with her teeth on it. The bark collar work to keep her calm, if she grunts and gets all worked up she gets zapped. So for me it does double duty! :)

The "Quiet" command is not hard to teach.  Only problem is that one has to be there to give it.  I cannot give it when I am at the store and my neighbors are out back.  Also, for high prey drive dogs, the command only works when you give it, it does not carry over with every new situation that comes along.  If you live in a place with lots of stuff going on all day that will bring on this response from the dog, you will need a bark collar.  If for no other reason than preventing a dog from  ruining your ears, it is wise to crate them while in your car with you or they will go crazy with every moving car that goes by.  If you desire to allow the dog to keep that high drive, or not step on it, then you will need to crate so they cannot see the car coming.  It is a battle that I personally do not enjoy engaging in.
