My brother had Misho, a 5 years old light yellowish Labrador for 4 years now. My brother lives at a different area located at approximately 15 Kms from our family house. Since he was going out for a vacation , my brother drove his dog for the first time from his house to the family house & he travelled abroad with his family for a couple of weeks period holiday.
Two days later my Mom phoned me up telling me that my brother's dog escaped (just ran away once the garden's gate was opened for a car to get inside) and no one manageed to catch him.
We all panicked & we spent the rest of the whole day searching for Misho & asking neighbors but in vain Misho is lost. We all hid the bad news from my brother who continued in asking about him in every phone call to my Mom.
We all continued searching for Misho but in vain he is lost.
Just today I was phoned up by my brother's friend & neighbor informing me that he found Misho touring around the area trying to get into my brother's house, I immediately went there I found him a bit dirty & exhausted but OK. I collected him, cleaned & fed him & he is currently with my dogs till my brother returns back.
We are all very surprised How did Misho do it?
He has never left my brother's house before, only just a couple of hundred meters apart to the small garden he visits everday where he does his mess & exercise etc...
Can you tell me how dogs determine their directions?

So glad you found MIsho unharmed! I don't know how they do it exactly but they must understand where the sun comes up at the very least. And the closer to home he gets there would be familiar smells to guide him, too. Don't forget the famous book, "Lassie Come Home" was written because of this amazing desire to find "home".

They do it the same way everything else does it.
And sometimes they get lucky.
And sometimes they get lucky.

He looks great! What a story to tell your brother when he gets back. Everyone must be so relieved. Your backyard looks very inviting, I'm thinking maybe a vacaton to Egypt would be fun for the whole family. I usually have visions of desert and sweat in my head, but you look like you live in a bit of paradise.

Tarekallam- That is always an amazing thing when a dog (or cat) finds it's way back home. There must be a strong bond with Misho and your brother. I second what beetree said about going to Egypt. It is one of the many places I would love to go.Always wanted to ride an Arabian horse across the desert and see the pyramids.

Have you ever seen the movie - "Eyes of an Angel"? It's about a Dobie that follows the little girl, who rescued him, from Illinois to California. Her father is on the run and dumps the dog. He apparently tracked them to the west coast and it's "based" on a true story. I don't know the true story so I'm not sure how close it is to the real thing but no matter how far, it was quite amazing considering they went by car, and he on foot. So, I know there have been dogs that travel great distances to get back to their people, they truly are amazing creatures! If you haven't seen the movie, it's very touching and I would recommend it... starring John Travolta.

GSDtravels I did see that...didn't it have John Travolta? That was a great movie.
Tarekallam-I actually dated a guy a long time ago from there.I was always hoping that we would have gone over there but we never did.
When life alows it ...I will let you know and I will be over there.
