My boy has VERY yeasty ears, last year I tried these products
Ketoconazole 200 mg. 1- 1/2 pills a day,
KetoChlor shampoo
Only to have a temporary relief of symptoms.
Now I feed him Yogurt for a few days if I see symptoms, and it works GREAT for his skin, but I cannot get rid of the ear issues.
I went to the vitamin store las night and picked up some Pau D' Arco to put directly into his ears,
I also bought Mineral Oil to put into his water, and directly into his ears,
Then I bought Pure Castile soap (liquid) to shampoo him with. I am hoping to attack this stuff from the inside out. Anyone use these new products I am trying? Results?
Thanks guys!
P.S. I know allot has to do with his food, but right now it is a "no grain" diet.

I have used Keta, both pills and shampoo. I never noticed any relief--I mean, yes for a couple weeks, but then back to square one. What works for me is, after tracking in high grass, going home and scrubbing my girl's belly with a warm wet towel, cleaning her ears out with regular ear-cleaning stuff, and washing her feet with warm soapy water. For us it's just about getting the damn allergens out while the grass is blooming, which it is now here in CA.

Your best bet, if he is not already, is to put him on a quality, grain free, novel protein diet. Try that for 4-6 weeks, no sneaking in other food during that time.
In my experience, 80% of ear issues are related to food allergies.
You can use purple power as a treatment as long as
1. the ear drum is not damaged and
2. the ears are not super raw as it will STING!
You can buy a gallon of nolvasan scrub from someplace like calvetsupply.com. Well worth the money. It can be used as a shampoo if his body also has the itchies. Remember to rinse well.
Good luck,
Mary

If your going to put things in your dogs ears check with vet first. I like otomax for inflamation and itching. It works so well, I have even used it on myself, ;-o Good luck.

Otomax did nothing for us, it is caused by the yeast. He only has a mild case. I just want to see if anyone has used what I am going to use, and the results, if any.

Did you try cleaning the ears daily with Opi-otic or vinegar 10%-25% solutions to clear the yeast first? It's not necessarily food related, some dogs are this way and you have to manage it. I haven't used what you are thinking of using, it would not be the drug of choice to try if it was me. Remember acetic solutions and yeast are "enemies".

I have never had a dog with ear trouble But i saw your post and i phoned my Vet who looks after the Vacc's of the Dogs and if anything is wrong and he looks after the Racing Pigeons too he is first class Vet i told him of your problem
He said firstly get some tissues you buy to wipe you nose with they are strong and soft He said to clean out the yeast as best you can first and he said you would be wise to put a Muzzle on the Dog because it will hurt him a bit and your face is close to the dog so he said take no chances
Then he said ask your Vet for some SUROLAN drops, put 3 drops down into the ear canel then Put some on your finger and spread in on the inside ear flap getting it into any creases, Do this morning and Night for two weeks
Each time before you put in the drops clean out the yeast or muck then put the drops in and over the inside of the ear
The Yeast likes dark places , Once the problem is clear he said to clean the Dogs ears out with a tissue once a week and put some drops in one day a week that will put him right he said
One last thing once you put the drops in massage the bottom of the ears so the drops work down
These drops are made by Janssen Animal Health
formula is miconazoli nitras 23mg, polymixini B sulfas 0.5293mg
prednisoloni acetas 5 mg/ml
Plus this from me change his food from a grain diet specially Corn, Wheat, and Soy, Oats is okay as is a little Barley but nothing else

Where did you get the idea to use the stuff you are trying? We are yet again doing the Keto and the shampoo. Let me know if what you try does work. This crap is getting old!
by VomMarischal on 14 March 2010 - 18:03
4pack, is yours reacting to the grass too? It's definitely not food with mine. It ALWAYS happens after exposure to tall grass. I have a feeling the tall grass is loaded with molds and yeasts of its own....
