People, I've got a really useless bitch here (German import, pink papers) who acts crazy whenever there is lawn equipment in the neighborhood, or fireworks, or thunder / lightning. She wants to get up over the fence and start running over hill and dale, like a steeplechaser. I've had a LOT of dogs over the many, many years, and this is the ONLY one that I can remember that's ever escaped my property, and she's done it twice. She get's "coyote syndrome" and will even try to eat her way through a wood fence or into the house.
I've thought about putting her down, because she is SUCH a pain in the ass, and I don't think she'd last long in a regular pet home. She'd clear the fence and be gone in a week.
Now, she's acting stupid, again, and there is no hint of lawn equipment sounds, anywhere.. nothing. What's up? I'm in S. Calif., not far from a major faultline with the initial I / N. I happen to know that it runs about 1/2 mile past this place. What do you want to bet, with all the earthquake activity in the world going on, that she is alerting on that, and that we're about to have an earthquake, locally?
Wait and see.. Maybe I've found a use for her, after all?

See if there is a way to check for seismic activity going on now. There must be some site in the web somewhere........?

Thanks, guys..
I'll let you know if I find anything. I'm going to go check at one of the sites that tracks earthquakes. There is a US government site that does that.
I don't like to make too many excuses for the dogs. This one just has bad nerves. She's a fun, cool dog in a lot of ways. I can actually heel her past a whole lot of fireworks on the street, 4th of July. I've seen dogs with worse nerves, but this doesn't make hers any better than they are, and that's just not good.
If I'd have known she was like this, I would definitely not have bought her. You know how THAT goes. She also has a stricture, and so I've never pushed to point on breeding her. I've had her now quite awhile. I think she's already seven and never had a litter.
I've got another line I'm working with now, and they're pretty "bomb proof", as a lot. Why mess with this? Allowing that I have only so much space and time to give my dogs, I really have to think hard about keeping her much longer. She's also very destructive and not a good house dog.

LOL.. I liked the suggestion about selling her as an earthquake alert dog. The problem is all the false positives they'd get from the lawnmowers and such.

There was one right about twelve hours ago, off the ocean. It was only a 2.5. I would not feel that, but a dog could. Wait and see. Maybe the site will be updated with a new tremor.
I'm not certain that we hear about all the little warnings leading up to a big one. I predicted the big one in Northridge, CA, in January of 1994. I actually heard a loud "BANG" coming from under my house one day, and I also felt other hard bumps when I was up a telephone pole, doing my job. That would be a good place to feel something like that. I told one of our dispatchers that we were going to have an earthquake, and within two weeks, we had Northridge.
I'm just tripping right now, because I know this dog was feeling something..

Well they say that animals are intuned to earthquakes. I remember when I was a kid and my family and I went to TN. There was an earthquake. My mom and I slept though it but my dad was awaken by the dogs and cows across the river going crazy. Then when I was living in KY for a while years ago there was an earthquake that I woke up to and the house moved and it felt like it was on a wave.I looked out at the dogs in the kennel and they were sleeping. Then again not much noise bothers them but I would think that the earth moving would!!
