These are the new films of the older dog whose hips I posted several weeks back. To refresh, it's a very very large, 2003 GSD male. The positioning was not good on the last ones and they were redone. IMO, they're not bad if you consider the size, age, and temperament of the dog who's been wearing on them all this time. I expected to see a total arthritic nightmare.

I think they look really nice,  on our right there looks to be a little remodeling;  however for  his age I think he will get a good.  Nan

I think good also.  I'm trying to learn.

I agree, Nan. I just wish you could send a video of the dog w/the submission, so they understand what these poor hips have been subjected to, LOL! I was literally afraid to look- he is SO hard on his body. The remodeling on the left (our right) is an old injury that we all expected to really be horrible by now. We expected it to have worn down the socket, and for it to be terribly subluxated, but the socket is still fairly deep/nice for his age. He's just a hair under 100lbs, so I do think that definitely plays a role. All in all, I think for his age and size and temperament, they are a very nice set of hips. I wish more people would xray old dogs; I think we'd get a better baseline for breeding if we followed them over a long period of time- who has ok hips and who has genetically very good hips. I think how they hold up over time is relevant.

Thank you for replying.

They look great knowing the the history. That dog will never take a bad step.

Thanks, Barb. I'm half tempted just for fun to see what the SV would say about them.

I think given the age they will get a Fair, maybe good if the OFA is in a good mood.

Thanks Molly. I'm thinking of sending a bottle of wine with the application.

Has anyone had good experiences w/objectivity/subjectivity on an older dog's xrays? I know they SAY they take it into account, but do they really?

by eichenluft on 06 March 2010 - 16:03

I really don't personally think they do.    IMO for an older dog that is already rated and passed - I'd keep the new x-rays for yourself and get opinions - even send them in e-mail for a verbal assessment from OFA (yes you can do that) but don't send them in for a new rating.  If it's worse, the newer rating will be the one recorded.

PS:  I was told several years back that they can definitely tell the difference between an old injury and dysplasia;  so I still feel they will get a good.
