So.. I haven't been on the board for a while. But I've had this nagging curiousity at the back of my mind for some time now. To you Breeders out there, how did you come up with your registered kennel name (ie. dog's name vom haus etc etc. ) ? I know some use their last names, but many don't. Does your kennel's name have a special meaning?
I want to start my own 'kennel' in time, and plan on breeding my own pair of dogs sometime soon.. But I have no idea what I would put down as the puppies' registered names. :S
Please enlighten me ( gently! ) on this situation, as I am completely in the dark.

Most kennel names describe either the kennel owner's name or a geographic feature located in the vicinity of the location of that kennel. If you chose a German name, be SURE to check with a native German speaker before you put that name in place. There are a lot of idioms, and slang terms we, not fully familiar with the culture, would not pick up on. IOW: Just because the literal translation sounds good to us, doesn't mean it won't sound ridiculous to a German. I've taken a lot of flack for Frauengarten. (No. I am NOT gay LOL)
If you live anywhere near the Great Salt Lake, you could probably come up with some pretty cool names from that.

I cannot emphasize enough how right Shelley is about checking with a native German speaker, before signing a name in concrete. There are some names out there that are funny as hell, others actually obscene, to Germans. You do not want to be a laughingstock, because you chose a kennel name unwisely.
I have no idea why Shelley mentioned Utah, but the name "Utah" itself could be the kennel name. It simply refers to land of the Ute (Native Americans). You could take the name from a mountain range or other geographical point. Some of the German kennels are named for views of a river, mineral, hills, etc.
Or, you could use the name or part of a name from your favorite dog, book, movie (please avoid Titanic--bad connotation), heck, even a car (vom Edsel, anyone?) Don't laugh, there is (or at least was) a German kennel named for the couple's VW Rabbits: von den wildenrabbits (may be wrong about the "den").

we use Hartwin. translated it means "brave friend" ..

Why not just use the name of the Street where you live for a base Kennel name
Many do, the Kennel my Dogs are bred from use the street name for there Website Kennel name
For instance i live in the Dorp (Village) called Gelmen
If i was making a Kennel name i could call it 'GELMEN KENNELS' But unless my Pup gets titled and Korclassed etc, then it will never happen, but just an idea,
