I just started feeding RAW Saturday.  Had their kibble in the morning and they each got a 1 lb. chicken quarter for dinner.  Sunday was chicken quarter for b-fast and rack of beef rib for dinner.  This evening they started their once a day feeding with 2 large chicken quarters each.  I did it cold turkey and have not had any loose stools, just the opposite in fact.  My 12 month old gets the runs from anything other than TOTW Salmon.  He has had "normal" poop the last 3 days.  Normal consistency, but not much there.  My 9 month old picks at her food and would never clean her dog bowl.  With this, after the first quarter, she looked at me like "Is that it?"  LOL  For those of you that feed RAW, do you have a schedule you go by?  Like chicken this day, then beef, then fish...etc.  I've also read to feed anywhere between 1.5-4% of their body weight?  I've started with two percent and will evaluate as time goes by, but would like to know what others are doing.  Also, would like to hear from those that fast their dogs once every 7-10 days.  I always thought this was to "clean" out their system, but with a true RAW diet, why would this be necessary?  I have jumped into this headfirst, and will probably have more questions as the weeks go by, but this is a start.  My only aprehension in this whole change has not been bacteria, nutrition or price, but the eating of chicken and fish bones.  I just hope they are chewing them enough to not get logded somewhere.  Has anyone had a problem with that?  Thank you for any responses.

Kibble isn't raw, you know. Why feed kibble AND raw? The COMBINATION may be what is giving him the runs. Not necessary. And no, I've never had problems with fish or chicken or even giant turkey bones.

Ahhhh....yeah!  Where did I state I thought kibble was RAW?  I was looking for some help...
For others who may have trouble interpreting my post, Saturday I started RAW...woke up in the morning, fed the dogs their breakfast (kibble), went to the store that day, decided to start the RAW diet.   Bought a bunch of chicken quarters, beef ribs, pigs feet, fish....and then they got their first RAW meal Saturday night.  Haven't had kibble<---yes, I know not RAW....since Saturday morning.

Vom M...
I dont think she is feeding kibble and raw. Here is what she said...
"I just started feeding RAW Saturday. Had their kibble in the morning and they each got a 1 lb. chicken quarter for dinner. Sunday was chicken quarter for b-fast and rack of beef rib for dinner. This evening they started their once a day feeding with 2 large chicken quarters each...."
They had kibble Saturday morning and then have had raw ever since, if I read that correctly.

There are some VERY knowledgable people on this database that feed raw. Hopefully they will chime in here for you.

I don't have a schedule of feeding.  I don't want Pharaoh waking me up because he thinks it's time to eat and he wants me to wake up!!!

I feed him different amounts every day and if he has gotten a lot of exercise, I give him an extra feeding.

About three times per week he gets a one pund chubb of defrosted raw tripe with mucle, organ and ground bone. He gets a tin of sardines packed in water with no salt or raw eggs about four times a week.  He gets two chicken quarters or one chicken quarter and two cups of Taste of the Wild Wildlands recipe soaked in one cup of warm water.  I buy Stella and Chewey's prepared half pound patties.  I also give him Wild Salmon Oil.

If he hasn't gotten enough food he will bark at the refrigerator and lead me to his bowl.  Rarely, he will not eat everything in his bowl because I have given him too much.  I put a lid on his bowl and put it back in the refrigerator for later.

Just like humans, different dogs have faster or slower metabolisms and should be fed accordingly.

Pharaoh is very fit and muscular.  He doesn't abuse asking for more food because he is hungry.  He is almost 2 1/2 and maybe as he gets older that will change and he may want too much food.

My two previous shepherds were raw fed and maintained their weight pretty well.  Shadow lived to be thirteen and he was always lean and fit.  Phanny was a spayed female and when she got older I had to moderate her food.

When you are feeding a child you don't go to a bag of dehydrated food pellets and measure out two or three cups and put it in their bowl, knowing that you have given them the correct amount.  You feed them something different almost every day and sometimes you give them seconds and sometimes they leave food on their plates.

It is kind of like that.

There are some very good references and pretty easy to read book/booklets you may want to purchase.. its always good to have a solid book inyour hand to refer back to...
I've been feeding raw for probably about 5 years... my breeding females and their pups are fed raw.....we have had such good overall changes, that I am sold.. so much co, I am a distributor for Oma's Pride and Blue Ridge Beef

I also have a reference I put in my puppy packages.... "What vets say about raw feeding"... google that and you will find a wealth of info and a place to start with research
My favorite is Dr Ian Billinghurst, BARFworld.com i believe.... he has written a number of books his last being The BARF Diet.. its 100 pages, FAQ sort of book.. makes it so easy and has all the important info.. it can be found on dogwise.com
Good luck.. raw feeding is all about balance over time.. I feed mb's in the am (duck necks, chicken backs etc) and meat mixes or fish or tripe, etc... in the pm and I rotate all the proteins.. I do use supplements...
the theory is you feed 2-5% of a dogs optimal body weight in raw, puppies 5-10%..
We often skip a meal every now and again but I do know people whose dogs have a fast day... no matter what you (or your dogs)eat its good to get a cleansing  ... dogs on their own have to eat oppotunisticly so they fast even more .. but they gorge and then not eat for days..

Lots of references out there, so worth being armed.... and informed
