 Hello,

I have someone who has contacted me asking if I know of any reputable US breeder for Lackenois. To tell you the truth, I know sort of what that breed is, but not much. If any of you know for certain of a reputable breeder and a web site or contact information, please post it here. The individual who has contacted me wanted my advice on shipping a pup from Europe. So if we cannot locate someone she wants to deal with here, she will go to Europe.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, the Lackenois organization website at that link, when one clicks on it, gives a MALWARE warning from Google. Though I have a MAC, and don't worry too much about that stuff, others with PCs should be deterred. I will check out some of the other links. I have learned that the breed is not recognized in the U.S.

Thank you.

The Lackenois (wire haired), Tervuren (long coat tri-color), Groenendael (long coat solid black) and Malinois (short straight coat) are the four varieties of Belgian Shepherds.  My understanding is that they were originally considered one breed and puppies of the different coat types were born into the same litters.  Now they are each a different breed.

I have seen all of them except for the Lackenois.

Good luck, they are pretty cute,

They were all considered the same breed at one time and were split in the late 1800's in Europe.  The Groenendael is known as the Belgian Sheepdog in the US. They were grouped together under the general name "Chien de Berger".  When imported to the US in the in the mid 1900's they were simply called "Belgian Shepherd dogs" until they were registered separately in the the late 1950's.  The Lackinois is still not a recognised breed by the AKC.  I knew a Tervuren breeder back in the early 80's.

Saw a few, There was one that was KNPV titled years ago in NC i think, maybe SC. It was at a seminar we where doing.Stocky nice wire haired dog. I also have seen some brought over for police from KNPV clubs but not titled. I would like to own one but people in Holland and Belgium tell me its hard to get one that excels in sport, they said mainly they are  being bred for show. Too bad just like with the German Shepherd when you start to breed for show the working ability goes out the door.

You can also contact Michigan Border Patrol http://web1.userinstinct.com/22465645-united-states-government-border-patrol-port-huron-station.htm as they use a Lakenois. They may be able to help with the breeder. Good luck!

Is the breed recognized in Canada? I think there are a couple of breeders in Canada.
