I did start reading the other topic and as they often do it fell apart after the first page or so.
So owners of stud dogs --- have you ever refused the use of your stud dog over a female ? If the answer is yes why ?
I have never been refused a stud for any of my females --- Never been asked too many questions either but I do always supply copies of pedigree, A Z and Breed Survey Certificates and a recent photograph when I request the use of a stud dog.

I was refused at first...the guy said he doesn't breed to outside females. But once he met her he changed his mind. I think he probably just said that so people wouldn't be disappointed if it turned out not to be up to his standards? I don't think he wants his dog's name on inferior puppies...that's what I would think, if I had a stud. This guy asked a LOT of questions and trained with her a few times before agreeing.
PS. It probably helps (the breed) that he doesn't really need the money.

Yes, we have refused stud service to some dogs, over the years...
If you have a stud dog, as a minimum, you at least need:
1) proof of a recent (less than 4 weeks old) negative brucellosis test;
2) OFA or SV hip and elbow certification (no prelims!);
3) AKC registration;
4) proof of lease of the female, if she is not owned by the person soliciting the stud service;
5) for the female to be obviously healthy, in good condition, and free from any chronic or hereditary health problems;
6) for the female to be over 24 months of age.
Additionally, you might want some proof of any claimed titles, etc. Keep in mind that the puppies will carry the name of your stud dog in their pedigree, so don't breed to any dog that you would not be comfortable fielding queries about, and carrying the kennel name of the person soliciting the stud service.
Feel free to be picky.... It is your dog!

I get contacted about every other month requesting to use one of my boys. My answer is usually no. I bred one of my boys to an outside female (friend of a training partner) and I couldn't stand not having control of the pups my boy put out there. The breeder did follow his contract with me and offered pups only Limited papers (until OFA'd & Titled) and did allow me to have the pups microchipped and we tatooed. Call me a control freak but after 14 years of doing GSD Rescue I feel the right to be a control freak.
I did offer the use of one of my boys to an owner of one of my own pups after she OFA'd & Titled (and I changed their papers to Full) but the female refused the male on all attempts and when I told them they would have to A.I. they decided it wasn't worth the battle.
Normally when someone contacts me and I tell them I need a copy of the pedigree, OFA Hip & Elbow (bare minimum!), brucellosis test, and to meet the bitch, they never contact me again anyway.
As for my girls being turned down for an outside stud. Yes, I was hoping to breed her to an up & coming work line dog in my area. He hemmed and hawed and I was excited at the pedigree it would produce. He decided not to go forward because my dog had AKC sport titles instead of Schutzhund (though her parents were imports & titled). Not two weeks after he told me no, I found out the dog was having issues with his eyes at a Trial he attended and was diagnosed with a degenerative eye issue. After THAT, I never looked at outside males again unless I know them personally!!!

I've refused - once when asked by someone to breed to my 2yo male who was not yet OFA x-rayed and I refused for that reason. I had him x-rayed that year and he's OFA good. And I've also refused when asked to breed to a bitch who was not OFA'd herself. Not that there was necessarily anything wrong with her hips, the bitch owner "just didn't OFA" and I simply said I wouldn't breed. They certainly understood. I know that OFA isn't the be-all, end-all, and OFA Good or Excellent parents can produce pups who aren't, but for me, that's my decision.

I've turned away 3 or 4 people just by asking for proof of OFA (or other hip certification). What you listed is the bare minimum requirements, and most people can't or don't want to even meet that.

REGARDING THIS SUBJECT IN ORDER TO NEVER BE REFUSED ONE MUST APPROACH THE OWNER OF SAID STUD WITH RESPECT AND AN AIR OF HUMILITY. AT THIS TIME ITS BEST TO ASK FOR A "PITY" BREEDING.

by dogshome9 on 25 February 2010 - 03:02
RONNIE I did try very hard to phrase this subject well.
From what you have said so far I believe that you are only requesting the bare mimum and IF I owned a stud dog those are exactly what I would want also and if the bitch owner could not produce any of those qualifications I would cetainly turn them away.
Age > 2 years
Proof of hip less than 16 and no more that 8 on any side. ( maximum )
Elbows 0/0 or grade 1 only .
Breed Survey -- proof of Class 1 or 2
Pedigree Certificate
If any of these is missing I would tell them to look elsewhere.
