In case anyone's interested, NBC is airing a story about a blind sled dog. It'll probably be on the NBC website Olympics coverage if you miss it on tv.

Ok, the story wasn't particularly well done, but it made me think of Oakley so I posted it.
Didn't see it on the NBC site yet, but here's another story about this active, blind dog: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2009/11/25/mb-sled-dog-isobel-churchill-manitoba.html

I thought it was a good fluff piece. I've been mushing before and it's a total blast! I would go out with a sled team every day if I could.

There's absolutely no reason a blind dog wouldn't be wonderful at sledding...Oakley runs around places she's never been before like it's her lifetime home...no fear at all. They have keen senses and can manage very well!
It's wonderful to see people step up and give blind dogs a chance at life...They so so well.

Great story. I wonder if in fact a small part of even one retina did not reattach itself? On the other hand, I too have a dog who is almost blind and I am often amazed at how well she does. Thank you for posting the link Tess.

I saw a clip...I can't believe someone said that they should just take the dog and shoot it!!! It isn't like there is something wrong with it and it is sick and in pain. I rode a horse that was blind...well I think partialy cause he would ride the rail of the fence kinda feeling his way around. If I had him go to the center of the arena he was very quick on que. There is a trust that is build between animal and human or animal and animal to help the other along.

I saw it when it aired. That bitch seemed to get around just fine and is clearly a healthy, happy dog!
I'd like to try mushing some day...along with snowboarding. It looks like such fun, on TV, at least.
Nice to see that we still have those "dare devil" genes in the gene pool!
