Got a call last night from a friend who stopped a young girl walking down the street with a gorgeous GSD. She was crying and told my friend she was looking for someone to give her dog to. She said her dad told her if he came in from work this morning, (he works nights) and the dog was still in his yard, he was taking it to the "dog pond". My friend called me to see if I could help because he couldnt take the dog. Poor girl said she asked people in the neighbor to take the dog, but no one wanted him.  So guess where I am headed today? Is this ever gonna stop. Its really so sad. I'll keep you guys posted and post pics, if you guys want to see him..

Why does Dad want the dog gone?

by hodie on 24 February 2010 - 15:02

Sadly, it will never end until breeders don't breed for money. Period. Don't tell me for one minute that in most cases if someone comes along with the right looking money, people sell. And unfortunately, they sell all too often to the wrong person. Even in the minority, where breeders really DO try to carefully screen buyers and potential owners, we have all read here, many times, how they get fooled, sell a dog and the dog ends up paying for having been unlucky enough to get an idiot or irresponsible owner.

This week alone I have had 7 requests to take dogs. All but one were what I consider dog dumping attempts of the worst kind. In one case there is a sick owner. I cannot take any of them. Guess what the next step is? Being put down. That is the cold, hard, facts of being involved in dogs. We are all partly responsible for this scenario, even those of us who care and try to rarely breed, and try to screen owners.

I hope you can find out why the dog must be "dumped" and help it if it is not a serious temperament issue. In my 15 years plus of experience with rescue, I only came into contact with a single dog who I felt was beyond help with some proper training of the involved human and the dog.

Dad wants the dog gone because he works nights and sleeps in the daytime and can't sleep.

Lame ass excuse! Bark collars, ear plugs, training, exercise for the dog? Gee, wonder why he did not think of this before he got the dog.

I agree...No excuse at all.  A young child is being hurt by having to give up her dog, and a dog is being dumped, all because they never bothered to teach him the command Quiet.

A bark collar is not that expensive, a walk is free...If barking is his only issue, they are very fortunate and it's a shame to just give up on him.

Such a shame!

Actualy he didn't get the dog. His daughter's (18yrs old) boyfriend bought the dog in Kansas when he was living there. The dog is 3 yrs old now. The daughter moved out from her boyfriend's place in December and moved back in with her mom and dad. She took the dog with her. Her parents agreed to give the dog a chance. However seems it wasn't working out. She said she refused to use a shock collar on him because she couldnt hurt the dog that way. The dog is her baby. She said she tried everything and would prefer to give him away instead of trying the collar. She also did take him on walks 2 to 3 times a day. Its just when she is not with him, he barks. Its really sad because you can tell she put alot of time into this dog. He was very responsive to her as he is now with my daughter. This dog is a really wonderful dog. They lost his registration papers during moving. Hoping we can get duplicate. Will post pics later.

Hodie,

Why dont they try giving the dog a large bone to gnaw on during the day, when the dad is sleeping?

This after exercising the dog in the morning, via chasing a ball makes all the difference.

Works for me just fine...dog is mucho quiet.
