What I was wondering is if a pup has no interest in a ball(ball drive) will or can the owner bring this out in the pup/dog? Is ball drive something that the pup/dog has or does not have? Would ball drive be different than toy drive or are they the same thing?
Has anyone had a pup/dog that had low or no ball drive that has done will in dog sport? Is it possible for a dog to do well in dog sport if they just have food drive(work for food reward as opposed to ball play, tugging ect)?
By ball drive, food drive, toy drive I mean the willingness for a dog to work or be trained because it knows its going to get that reward.
For instance, my dog is what I call ball crazy. She would play ball 24/7. She is always ready for ball play. While I can work/train her using food/treats as a reward, she will only work/train for so long for a food reward. Now when I use her ball as a reward she will work for as long as I want as long as I have her ball and she knows she will be rewarded with it in the end. Am I correct in that this would be considered ball drive?
I hope I explained what I am asking correctly. I guess the main thing I am wanting to find out is if a pup/dog does not show much interest in balls , will/can this come out as the dog matures?

She didn't like balls at all at first. but she will play two ball now. I want to say her prey drive is high - cause if it is moving - she is after it. But it is what it is. When it stops moving - she goes smells the flowers instead...... I have every kind of toy under the sun - and it has taken alot of hard work "on my part" to get her interested in anything.
I think dog's with low drive can do schutzhund - or any kind of work - but it is so much easier to train a dog with great prey drive... It is more rewarding as well. As far as the doing well in the sport - I have only been in the sport for a couple of years and I started with Her. I am not going to be standing on the WUSV podium anytime soon...lol
People said she wouldn't do anything so get another dog... Well I got another dog - but I persisted with her and she has turned out to be better than anybody gave her credit for... She was and is a learning experience for me and I embrace that and plan on getting her as far as she can go...

If you do not develop prey drive. The dog will loose it.
P.S. Please do not call it "Ball drive" same way you do not call it a chicken drive when the dog chases chicken.:)
It is a "prey drive" whose part is "chasing reflex".
