Irresponsible parenting and again the media misrepresents the breed of the dog that killed the child. When will parents learn to never leave a child unattended around animals.

I agree mindhunt. I have never had a dog that Icould not trust with a child of any age and trust me, some of of our dogs had their patience sorely tested. Years ago we had a GSD/Border Collie mix who let my 3 year old sister use his ribs for a trampoline, wagging his tail the whole time she bounced up and down on him.. The only reason I discovered them was because of the sound her giggles and his "grunting" each time she landed on him. Job did not have the patience of that dog. Our family could do anything with that dog yet strangers never had a doubt that he would eat them alive if they stepped onto our property. God I miss that mutt. He has been gone for 34 years now. My husband's parents had a GSD bitch that followed his mother everywhere. Mom realized Heidi wasn't with her arfter she left a room where she had put a baby down on the bed for a nap. When the dog didn't respond to her call she figured she must have accidently shut the bedroom door, leaving the dog in the room. She went back to the bedroom to find Heidi frozen in a platz beside the bed, the baby draped over her back. The baby had rolled off the bed and landed on Heidi and she was not about to move until someone rescued them both. Despite happy endings like these, I myself am very wary of leaving dogs and children unsupervised until the child is old enough to understand that I will strip the hide off his behind if I ever catch him disrespecting an animal. What happened in Florida is a tragedy. I have a feeling that the dog was simply breeding stock and not a true family pet. Very sad all around.

A Pitbull, not a huge surprise.

Red,
Look again. Not a pit but an American bulldog. The press has it wrong again. Surprise!

Oops, my bad sorry. I just skimmed. These stories make me ill. I shouldn't read them in the first place. Stupid people.

When mass-generalizing and admittedly "skimming" about these dogs and stories, could everyone do me a favor and use the proper breed name (that is, if it was an American Pit Bull Terrier- which I find highly unlikely and am usually correct)? I would be grateful. If you must abbreviate, please use the simple letters APBT. Or, Pit Bull works, or hell, at this point, I'd even take PB. But "pitbull" is unacceptable and I know not what breed it refers to, as some misguided folks use it to refer any number of a "type" of dog (also incorrect). Every time someone writes "pitbull" it sends a huge red flag right up to my eyes telling me they don't know a thing about the breed. Kind of like "germin shepard." Thank you kindly.

Pit bull is a term commonly used to describe several breeds of dog in the Terrier family. Many breed-specific laws use the term "pit bull" to refer to the modern American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and dogs with significant mixes of these breeds; however, a few jurisdictions also classify the modern American Bulldog and Bull Terrier as a "pit bull-type dog". The term can also refer to dogs that were known as "bull terriers" prior to the development of the modern Bull Terrier in the early 20th century.from wikipedia
In the eyes of the media the''pit bull'' is a generic type dog not an abbreviation for APBT Its a world where a bulldog is a bulldog is a bulldog ..looks like a duck .... and I'm pretty sure Am Bulldog which is a fairly new breed has Pit in it,I can see why they think that by the way those particular dogs looked ...for some reason it won't let me post the link I know we never supposed to cut and paste on here

Well, Lief, thank you. You've just cleared all that right up.
MY POINT is that "the eyes of the media" are IGNORANT! "Pit Bull" is NOT SLANG FOR A WHOLE BUNCH OF BREEDS. It is a shortening of a particular breed's proper name...much like GSD. When we say GSD, do we mean anything that sort of kind of looks like it might have just a teeny bit of Shepherd-ish blood in it? As long as we sit idly by and allow these morons to dictate our perceptions, we will continue to read articles like the above. Now here we are, having a "Pit Bull" discussion when it was an AMERICAN BULLDOG THAT DID IT!!! If it was a damn Westie, would this be interesting? Would we call it a Pit Bull? I mean, a Westie is a terrier too, right? Too small? How 'bout an Airedale? Close enough, right?
Yes, people use it as such, and normally it shouldn't matter- but are any of these other breeds going to "go down" willingly with the true APBT? No. If it's banned, everyone's going to be scrambling to dissociate their breed w/the APBT. But for now, it's fine to let proper APBTs take the blame for any crime committed by any short haired muscular dog.
LMAO. Wikipedia? Really? That's where we're getting accurate info from nowadays? Puhleeeeeeze.
And off I got to take my blood pressure medication..............................lol
