OMG Ronnie that is a horrible story! Yes, if he thought about bringing Sam home, first, why didn't he call for backup, seeing how there were 50 people ganging up! Sick people in this world. Your new avatar is so refreshing compared to this story.
EDit, why do you mock me so! I am plenty satiated of potatos, that's all. Time for 'tater to hit the fryer....

I would believe that he took "Sam" home first......because they were both off duty, and may not wanted to have his partner involved in an "off duty attack"??!......JMO

I am thinking Sam, was a pet and not his K9 partner. There is no mention of Sam being a Police K9. He probably did call for backup when he went home and then returned to the scene. It does take time for responding units to arrive. A LEO off duty in plain clothes does not get the same respect as one in uniform, and will be challenged more readily. It is something that all Police Officers need to be aware of off duty. This is a horrible story and I hope the officer recovers and the criminals are caught and prosecuted.
I don't go anywhere off duty with out a gun, I am armed even when I walk my dogs. Had I have been out walking my older female I might have brought her home or put her somewhere safe. Boomer would be right with me, even off duty. I could easily justify using my K9 in that situation. I'm assuming the Officer was unarmed as they did not report any one getting shot. IMO, a LEO should not go anywhere off duty with out a firearm. They are at best a good witness and at worst a victim if unarmed.
I wish this officer a speedy and full recovery.
