Rabid Raccoon In Baldwin County Prompts Reminders To Immunize Pets
------------------------------------------------------------------
The diagnosis of a rabid raccoon in the Silverhill area in Baldwin
County, Alabama, has prompted public officials to encourage pet owners
to be sure their dogs, cats and ferrets are vaccinated against the
fatal disease. Charlotte Plumb, environmental supervisor with the
Baldwin County Health Department, said, "We strongly caution people
not to approach stray animals, wildlife [or]bats."

I learned at a young age about Rabies from watching Old Yeller.

Of course they called it  (Hydro Phobie!)

Yes vaccinate your animals.

Rabies have been around here for as long as I can remember. About five years after we first moved here, there was this raccoon that appeared, ambling strangely, right toward us right around the stroke of noon. I immediately started calling my dog back to me, thank goodness he listened. I called animal control and this older guy with a big belly showed up with his shotgun. Unfortunately he never found it and we all figured the raccoon was bound to be dead sooner rather than later. I took the dog for a booster anyway because I was paranoid... he'd circled the sick animal and I never saw him close enough bite it. A thirteen year old girl died from being bit by a brown bat, they weren't aware of the risks until she started to show symptoms which by then was too late. Be aware if you have fox near by, the sick ones have been known to attack dogs left outside unattended.

Rabies has always scared me ever since I first read, "Old Yeller".
