Our beautiful, wonderfully good natured German Shepherd Molly is 14 years and four months old. Back legs just beginning to cause problems! I put her good health down to never walking up or down stairs, a good diet - regular meals- lots of oily fish and cod liver oil tablets!

Congrats on the nice long life.

My male, Cezar Spode Trate turned 13 in August. He isn't showing any signs of back or leg trouble, and I'd like to say he's had an easy life, but he's had a working dog's life: military then competition, and he still gallops up and down stairs on a regular basis. He'll eat fish if I give it to him, but his diet is mostly meat and poultry based. No fish oil suppliments for ol' "Zar"

Goes to show that it's as much genes as environment that dictates how well a GSD does as s/he gets older.

I heard that Held vom Ritterberg made it to age 15. The old DDR breeders did not spoil their dogs or have expensive medical clinics and specialists, either. DDR dogs frequently make it to a very advanced age. 13 is not unusual. I have Arek von uns Heimaturt, SchH3 with me and he just turned 11.. Is still fertile and potent and looks / acts like a dog 3 years younger than he is.

It's nice to hear that your old girl is still healthy and happy!

Wonderful to hear of seniors doing well!  I love old dogs.  I once met a woman who told me she had a GSD that lived to 24 and died while she was on vacation.  I don't know that I believe it, but it would be the oldest living GSD I've ever heard of, if true.  Some people like to pad the truth and some just say whatever they think will impress someone.  Guess I'll never know, but it's wonderful thinking it COULD be true!

My rescue boy Sam is going to be 14 in April. He still gets around pretty good...but then, he's on Rimadyl twice a day so he doesn't stiffen up. He tries to be frisky and it's so darn cute.
