I just tried to google something like the topic line and it came back: NO RESULTS  I was very surprised. This is a missed opportunity for someone, I think. Wouldn't it be great if there was some kind of voluntary/consumer rating body like they do for restaurants or hotels?  There could be different categories, like small scale breeder, large scale breeder. I mean everyone is always giving the dogs Titles and Awards to be judged upon. Why not do the same for breeders/kennels so we the buyers have something to compare, three bones vs. two bones?

Like an Ebay rating system?

by beetree on 12 February 2010 - 22:02

You know what ShadyLady, I wasn't thinking in that direction but, why not for this website? In the breeder section, there could be reviews etc. Might help with eliminating the breeder scamming/bashing threads from disgruntled clients.

And then there still could be a private rating awards system, I know I'm going to have to do this myself, LOL, maybe LAV will help me, to distinguish the finest from the good enough. Maybe Shelley has some spare time and she could write the reviews, she does have an entertaining writing style. I'll have to figure out how to send in an anonymous inspector who checks for minimum standards of care, better, best, exemplary. It should be an honor to be rated, like the difference between a two star hotel and a four star hotel, except these should be bones or something.

Yea kinda like rating a restaurant.Instead of food critic it would be kennel critic.
Cleanlyness
Hospitality
dog quality
non puppy mill or puppy mill type as in breeds WAY too many
Kennel lay out
etc etc ....
I know I drove over 2000miles to pick up my pup.I wanted to see how the breeder lived and cared for her dogs.It was imaculate!!! I was super impressed. Now i kinda hold other breeders to that standard but know that not everyone can have the perfect set up that this breeder did. Would be cool to have a rep from eash state go to the breeders kennels and be able to write a report. If there is a breeder that doesn't want to be involved you kinda have to wonder why!!

It's a good idea Bee. If only we had the reviews that were compiled from people who complain here about their treatment from a breeder, that would be a start. And then you'd also include the people who had good experiences.

LAV, yeah,  it'd be like an anonymous breed warden!  Btw, why is your avatar all whacked?

Hey Shady...I tried to change my avatar and it changed the size to the other pic I was trying to post but not the pic!!! The other day it changed just fine.It is driving me crazy!!

For the breeder review it could be annomynous messages sent or mailed and there has to be proof of them actualy being bad if they are it can't be some vandeta. There are ones I don't like the breeder on a personal level but it is also because of their ethics....or lack of. So it would be good and bad A part that has a rating 1-10 (bones lol) and then a few pros and cons about them.
~L~ PS what do I do about the screwy avatar?

by beetree on 13 February 2010 - 16:02

Yes, to do it right, we have to go state by state. Kind of like a camping ground guide? Think of how many legitimate breeders that could be! And then what if it that were further specified by breed? (You do realize the GSD has moved to the #2 breed spot in the USA, up from #3.)  This job is way too big. We need a sponsor, a magazine maybe, and they could make it into an ongoing column, for starters. In the end when all the states are finished being categorized, can we turn it into a book for sale. That's where the money will come in.

Besides the physical  and cleanliness aspects, health concerns and outbreaks of such like (Parvo, kennel cough,) and their resolutions would be great to know, too. However, It should be more about what a breeder or kennel does right, than what they do wrong, though. It has to be something positive and attractive for them or we'll just get the same response I'm getting from them on this thread, LOL The more they do right, the more bones are awarded to them.

Beetree you have a perfect forum for that Idea right here! start up costs will be substansial! Maybe  Oli would consider sponsering some few unbiased individuals to write some columns on this site ? Of course nothing negative could be said about the different breeders! Perhaps a weekly column focusing on one breeder and the breeding program ! What they are attempting to accomplish in breeding and what sport they are most interested in!  through out the week posting positive comments on the dogs bred and acomplishments made , owners bios and a final weekly summation on the kennel with possible pictures of facilities so forth ect ect!  Plenty of kennels would  fight for the ad space and probably help subsidize the effort! Girl that is a capital idea! as a newbe It would have helped me immensly in my purchase though I do not regret my purchase at all!
