I was wondering if DDR german shepherds are usually good at the sport of schutzhund if so can anyone tell me which breeder or kennel breeds DDR dogs to excel in this sport.  I like the temperment and the look of DDR more than the drive crazy west working.

There are several people that breed nice DDR dogs. Most of the DDR dogs make ok sport dogs. They usually are not going to be National or WUSV level dogs. But they do make good club level dogs.
Here are a few people that breed very nice DDR dogs....

I would contact any one of these 3 breeders I have listed and they can tell you alot about the DDR dogs.

I own DDR and West German, in my experience, it is more difficult to train the DDR for schh as they don't always have the drive, I found myself trying to always bring the dog up in drive, rather than when i train my West German dog, who I have to try and bring down.

But both are good in their own way, DDR is ECXELLENT tracker, OB is good, protection was the hardest part.

WEST - excellent protection, great OB tracking was the hardest with this dog.

But this is just my experience with these dogs, I am sure other would tell you differently, good luck.

I have purchased two in the past, gave one away, and lost on the other one, nice civil aggression, not enough toy drive.
my two cents.

My little DDR bloodline puppy female (Izzy) has alot of prey/play drive......she is so much fun!
She is 5mos old, and it's a pleasure to watch her "work" (puppy work that is)...a little pistol!.......she already has her very own lil "fan club" at training!

Isadorable Izzy has a fabulous DDR pedigree and as an only child she really got a lot of early training and attention.

I sure hope you will keep us posted and how about some pictures.

Jean Schrader's Dog,  Lux Kamerunner Eck, has drive out the wazoo.  I rather imagine like the maturity question in the other thread it depends on which family line you are looking at.  I have a "western german" working line bitch whose family has been slow to mature and I crossed her with an "eastern german" line family (ironically enough Lux) that is also slow to mature mentally.  My young dog is now starting to come into his own at the age of three.  Claus has never lacked for drive.

I took Barbie to Lux because I wanted a little more free thinking and independance in my working dogs.  I don't care so much about points but I do want a dog who can problem solve and has their own agenda.  I got what I wanted and also improved the conformation a bit to.  Granted I don't play in sport as much but I find that the foundation bitework is the same and the sport club is a good place to get it .

(why does it always make me think of the "Artist formerly known as Prince" when trying to talk about those dogs from the part of germany formerly known as DDR ?)

Here is Claus last year when he was learning the bite suit, he has even more fun with it now.

Here is a picture of Claus by the Christmas tree.

Can't tell I'm proud of him and enjoy him can ya

How many ddr dogs currently competing in Schutzhund sport?

My guess is very few.
