Best best based on what you say here is to find someone to help you, and now. Otherwise, you are unlikely to get the help you need. IF the dog is already afraid of you, there is a problem. It might be the dog, it might be what you are doing. In any case, you need help. Find someone in your area that has EXPERIENCE with GERMAN SHEPHERDS and how to train both the dog and the owner. It most often is the owner that really needs the training.....on just how to train the dog.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Why is it yall always pass the buck. This person is seeking advice on how to train his dog and all he gets is find a pro trainer ? So what, do you need a pro trainer inorder to own a good dog now ? Can't anyone ask for advice to train on their own ?
What is the purpose of these forums again ? Questions and learn dogs or pass the buck ?

BE, then why aren't you helping him instead of complaining? You read his situation, he thinks his set- up is okay. Pretty much horrifies me. There are so many problems, which one to pick first? Hodie and LAV are suggesting the best advice for the dog in the quickest darn way possible. The longer this guy waits, the worst for the dog. It is fearful at a young age and a kennel dog at best, (and hopefuly not chained to a tree in the backyard). And there are young kids in the picture. Did I read that right?
Dear OP, this is not a judgment on you, but you could use a whole lot of learning on the matter. Good luck, and yes, find yourself a competent trainer and you will have a chance to have the dog you want and need. The complete answer probably isn't on a DVD.
Also, your situation presents multiple issues, you might want to try a new topic dealing with one specific issue at a time. Just a thought.

BE,
The "why" advice is not offered should be obvious. But that is not why you asked that question and we all know that.
And what was your reason for not offering training advice? When someone does not have a clue, coming to a forum like this and getting boo koo ideas about how to do something, when the posters making the suggestions know neither the dog or the owner, more often than not, it does not work well. The result is the dog ends up being dumped. If people are experienced, and are looking for alternatives or suggestions and know how to do some of the work, it can work. Further, if all they want is a DVD, there is always google, or satellite or cable and a bunch of dog training shows. The decision to not offer advice is often made after careful consideration, whether you care or not.

Hodie is correct. The reason is obvious. Also, the reference to find someone experienced in his area does NOT mean he must hire a professional, and no one said it did.
Captain: You can go to any obedience training club, or schutzhund club in your area and get loads of help, hands-on. Where are you located?
You can find a list of schutzhund clubs in your area here: www. germanshepherddog.com. Click on "Club list" and then the appropriate region.
If there is an AKC show coming up in your area, check out the schedule. There are often obedience trials held in conjunction with the shows and you may be able to make contact with local obedience clubs that way, too.
You might also contact your dog's breeder for information regarding local training clubs.
Good luck.

Thank you beetree! I would have no problem advising in training as that is what I do for a living and have done for many years. That is why I suggest to go to someone that you can get hands on experience training your dog.So many peope here have a million different ways to train.I think it would be even more confusing to someone that is novice to have too many different answers. Also YES there are children involved. So without really seeing what situations are actually happening....it is hard to just go by what Captain32 says.People can read into things wrong on here....don't tell me that it hasn't happened on here!!! From what Captain32 is saying that the dog is cowering and he thinks it is cause of him.Maybe it is the choke that it is sencitive to (the noise or the correction).Without really seeing what is happening and jumping to a quick conclusion it might not be the case and therefor make matters worse.Maybe it is the dog and it needs some confidence building things or to be socilized more.Living out in the back yard and not getting out for walks might be the problem. Also with watching a DVD...thats great if there are no problems with the dog.If there are though....I doubt that the DVD has a thing that says" if your dog does this you need to do this." I really hope that they all get the proper training and by someone that can work with them and show them what to do. JMPO
