Hi guys. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to improve a really rancid bad breath in an epi/sibo dog. She is a poop eater, hower I pick it all up (most of the time) before she can eat it. I have seen no improvement in her breath. She has a real foul odor. She is on Viokase 1.5 tablespoons 2x per day, plus b12 shots which help with her stools, however no improvement in her breath. Teeth are good and are brushed and she gets dental bones occassionally. Any ideas on what I can do? I mention it to my vet, but he really does not seem concerned about it. She is on Wellness Core reduced fat.
Also, one more question. I am taking Molly in for tests as soon as I can get an appt. She seems to be drinking alot of water - approx 3 times more than my other two shepherds put together and has been urinating in her pen, even though I have someone come in 2 x per day while I am at work. Is there any link between epi dogs and diabetes? She will be 4 this weekend and was spayed in October.
Thank you,
Cheryl

Are you letting the enzymes sit on the food 20-30 minutes before feeding it to her?
Try a little pineapple in her food. Maybe a spoonful. That should help her stop eating her poop.
The water thing could be any number of things. Is her stool more runny than normal?
There is always the possibilty of urinary tract infection (unrelated to the EPI).
Best of luck with your dog!!!

Renofan, poop eating itself can cause killer bad breath, because the poop sticks to the teeth. Check her back molars. That could be the source of the problem!
Speaking from experience here...

As for EPI and diabetes, remember, the pancreas regulates both the enzymes for digestion and blood sugar levels. If you are concerned about diabetes you might want to have the blood sugar levels checked by your vet. My male drinks a lot of water also but I believe it could be because of the enzyme powder mixed with the food. I made the mistake of not mixing the enzyme/can food combo until all the powder was dissolved and his gums turned really red and he had some welts on the inside of his mouth. All is ok now but I'm very careful to make sure the enzyme powder is dissolved completely.
Good luck with your girl!

They enzymes cause a strange smell to their muzzle. The excessive water drinking seems to flare up more often when my dog has a bout of SIBO (bacterial overgrowth). That may be contributing to your dogs bad breath. Once that is addressed the excessive water drinking seems to subside. I strongly recommend you get your dog on a good probiotic and try to limit the stool eating. I know it's easier said than done though..

Thank you everyone. I also want to try the bioten mouth wash.
