The treatment of dogs in China has long been a favourite hobbyhorse of PETA and other similar organizations. What gullible viewers don't realize is that many of these film clips, such as the one of the racoon dog being skinned alive, are decades old, and do not reflect the current situation. I've suspected this for a long time, but it's hard to get recent updates, as what's news in China gets scant coverage in the west.
However, I saw this article tonight on another dog board, and am cross-posting it here. Progress is being made in changing people's attitudes towards dogs and other pets in China! Let's hope it continues!

They need a Walmart Super store and then they could be just like us.
I can hear the Chinese....No Walmart, No crap in our neighborhoods.

Just wait a few more years and see what's happening here...
Seriously, though, we need to butt out and let them alone.
Or, perhaps we should send a few billion dollars we don't have (and won't have for hundreds of years, because of how fast they're adding to the nat'l debt) over there to support the effort to ban the sale and eating of these dogs?
To me, with all the problems facing the humans of this country, I couldn't really care less about the plight of dogs in China. I'm a great deal more concern with homeless people here in the US, people who are suffering through no fault of their own, who lost jobs, homes, and everything. That is where my loyalties lie. Perhaps if more focus was put on relief of human suffering, then the situation of those animals would improve vastly, just because the humans they rely on are doing better.
If you were dirt poor, made such a tiny amount to live on per year, and didn't have any other options, I bet you'd be eating your dogs, too. Along with rats, and all the other disgusting things that make life possible in the poor districts of China.
Not thrilling, I admit, and I thank God every day that I live here, where I can eat real food and not raise dogs for meat.

I feel sorry for the Chinese people,
Not the government or the wealthy elite, only the people.
I see no reason to judge them.

Sitasmom, at least READ THE ARTICLE, please!
The times, they are a-changing, and it's not about preventing starvation:
In recent years, however, such traditions are increasingly criticised by an affluent, pet-loving, urban middle class.
Eating dog is a cultural tradition. It is especially popular in the cold Northern provinces of China, because it is believed to warm the blood. .

As much as we love dogs, its none of our business what they do with them. I'm glad the "educated class" is trying to stop the trade. In France they eat horses, in parts of Africa its guinea pigs. Who's to say what is right or wrong?
