think so, because white dogs are actually colored, just masked by whte

I have an american white shepherd foster in my home that's father was black and tan.he has some light cream color in his thighs and his backstrap though. They came from somewhere right. white is just a recessive gene. under the right conditions i would say its possible. but we have some more experience geneticists on here that could give an answer.

The reason I asked is because a friend of mine had a litter and she had one white pup out a litter of three.  she called the breeder  she had bought the dogs from and the breeder  said it could happen and it would be  a throw back from some where in the back generations.  I didnt think it could happen but maybe I am wrong .

Yes a white puppy can be born from two black and tan parents just like a solid black puppy can be born from two black and tan parents. Both solid white and solid black are recessives genes and both parents have to carry them in order for one to be produced in a litter. So both parents carried white. Are these german lines or American lines?

american lines why what difference would it make german or american.

are you answering that these are american lines happytogo?

by happytogo on 19 January 2010 - 02:01

yes the dogs are out of  american lines but I was wondering why it would make a difference whether it was american lines or german .  If one line would tend to throw a white and the other line would'nt be as likely.

I was just curious as to the lines of the puppies. Its equally as possible for german lines to throw whites as well as American lines. But the white gene has been almost bred completely out of the german lines. If the puppies were from german lines I would have just been very curious as to the breeding. I think white shepherds are very pretty and I would have to see one come from top german lines without close inbreeding. Thats all. I wasn't trying to bash or be negative.

If you had a pedigree with colors it would probably be easy to see where it came from  I would doubt he puppy could be deemed ''well-bred''
