Bhaugh

by Bhaugh on 15 January 2010 - 05:01

I took a dog into rescue about 6 weeks ago. When I saw him I just about cried. His coat was in horrible condition and matted to the skin. I changed his food to raw, took him to the groomer to get his coat back into condition and started him on an exercise regime. All was going well......until
he started chewing on his rump. He chews until the skin bleeds. The groomer and I thought it was a fungus problem so treated him for that. The original owner said that she has tested him for everything (dont know what that is yet have requested records from the vet but she said that she has done skin scrapings etc) and was told by her vet that he is a rare hair picker. I just dont buy that and wonder if his condition may be neurological in nature. I just cant believe that he would intentionally pull his hair out. When I touch the skin where he has pulled he cries. The spots are only on his rump. Here is what I know:

No fleas here in Vegas. He doesnt have other expternal parasites.
Have tried benedryl doesnt work
Add suppliments (ie fish oil and zinc something I got from a friend who works for a vet) to the food along with some bee pollin etc, spirilina and very green
Ive been using tea tree oil to keep him from pulling the hair and going bald
He doesnt pull anywhere else which makes me think that if he did have a hair pulling issue why just pull on the rump and not chew on his legs or pull anywhere else he could reach

SUGGESTIONS?

His coat feels great and looks 100% better. I dont know if this would make much difference but his tail was broke at some point and my vet friend says that he may have a fatty cyst on his tail.

When i read that his tail was broke at some point in time that struck a nerve...literly.It is possibly that a nerve is being agrivated and it is causing him pain so he is chewing at it.What was done to the tail after the break do you know? Have you had xrays of the tail to see if it healed wrong? Just a thought.

I have no idea when the tail was broke and I havent had the tail xrayed yet.  How could that be treated? Drugs for neuropathy? Ive thought about puting some lidicaine oral on it to see if he stops chewing.

There could be some connection between the broken tail and the chewing; he could also be experiencing pain from disc compression or a degenerative condition such as hip dysplasia, spondylosis--the first clue I had that my bitch had sustained an injury to a disc was her chewing at her flank, just to the side of the affected disc. It would be worth getting some x-rays done, since the situation hasn't responded to anything you've been doing so far.  If the problem is neurologic in origin, it may be helped by tramadol, but that's a script item so he'll need to see a vet before that could be tried out.

If there is an injury and there is some disk that is being compressed then you might have to get a part of it amputated.OR if it could be rebroke and set with a plate that could work too.It is all depending on if and who it is broke.I know from experience. My dog broke it's tail and had to cut some off. I didn't want to risk nerve damage or him chewing it off himself.I wasn't going to plate it for a few thousand. It wasn't like it was a broken leg.He can deal without a few inches of his tail. I would get an xray done to see if that is it.

If you can find one, try an acupunture/chiropractic vet...I had some work done on my Beau, and he is back to normal. After real vet suggested a $4000 MRI and back surgery...
I have also had work done on several rescues that needed back work and they have been doing awesome...
Just a thought, one that has worked for me in the past and present...

I would ask them about treating the dog for sarcoptic mange, there is an ''atypical'' form that affects only one dog in the household and causes intense itching ,you could try revolution on the outside chance the dog had a flea
