I have someone inquiring about using one of my males for stud. He's just short of being 2 years old and having his OFA officially done. I had him prelimmed at 14 months by a Orthopedic Vet and he rated his hips "very good" and elbows "normal"...which I have in writing. My male is from a long history of good/excellents. He will have his 2 yr. old OFA done before the pups are born. His female is OFA Excellent. If my male were certified by the SV, it wouldn't be an issue, but because it's OFA and not official, I am curious what some thoughts on this are. I have NOT agreed to the breeding as I had/have every intention of OFA'ing my male.

reputation with GOOD breeders who actually care about the breed.
I am VERY picky who breeds to my male as if someone is as careless to breed to an uncertified male, they arent going to be very careful placing their puppies in good forever homes.
but of course this is all my opinion :-)

why do you ask about titles? This is about breeding on prelims. Would it make any difference to you if he had titles and still was not OFA'd? Just curious.

Bending ones standards can be a slippery slope.

I do have morals and standards. My reply to the person with his female was "No, not this heat cycle". I explained that my boy needs his official OFA rating first. He is a very nice guy with a very nice female. He is more than willing to wait until her next heat cycle.
JRANSOM...thanks for your comment on the titles. It was a prelim question, not a question about should I be breeding my male if he isn't titled.
But for the record, I do work and title my dogs.
Thanks again, I appreciate your thoughts on this.

Why wait for OFA? I'm not a huge fan of OFA for the most part anyway. He's old enough to be certified in every country but this one. I also think it's ridiculous to think that genetic HD is not going to show by 14mos. If HD was all genetic, we'd have eliminated it by now due to careful breeding. If his hips are good at 14mos, but something happens to screw them up after 24 mos. (injury, etc.) when you send them to OFA, then what? I know SEVERAL dogs who had great hips and then injured themselves in that year (think about it; that's when heavy training and high potential for injury is most likely) waiting for OFA, and then didn't pass in one hip, tore an ACL and had subluxation due to being laid up all those months, etc.
You need good hips for breeding. Duh. But I do think we get a bit narrow focused and forget to look at the BIG picture when breeding. Pretty soon we'll have really crappy dogs with great hips....oh- and titles too. <roll eyes> WE NEED TO BREED THE RIGHT DOGS- NOT JUST THE RIGHT HIPS AND TITLES AND PEDIGREES.
Rant over. Thank you for your time. LOL.
