Hey all

My old girl (seen in avatar pic) has reall rough cracked elbows.  They are very caloused and have cracked once or twice in the last month.  She is old and likes to lay down and sleep a lot these days.  Is there anything you all could recommend for treatment?  I appreciate your input.

Thank You

Rooka

I have used the leaves of an aloe vera plant much like you would squeeze the sap out for a burn. I have heard of people using bag balm as well. There is another product (I have not used) called, TenderFoot by NaturVet. I believe it is sold at the chain pet stores and online. Good luck.

A little baby oil rubbed in a couple of times a day might help.Possibly a nice soft bed to lie on if she doesn't have one already.

Rooka, those are callouses. Find something soft to cushion her favourite sleeping places, and that should prevent the problem from happening. In the meantime, baby oil or some other skin moisturizer should help.

I had a problem with my old girl, who, from the day I first adopted her, considered it her duty to guard the front door. People thought it was TERRIBLE of me to let this poor old skinny dog sleep on the cold, hard tiles.

So, I bought her a nice cushion. She refused to use it.

She went and slept on the cold, hard tile floor in the bathroom instead!

Sometimes you just can't win!

Bag balm;  you can get it almost anywhere;  feed stores, I think I even saw it at Wal Mart??  But definitely feed stores and pet supply stores.

Bag Balm is useful, gold bond ointment, vaseline, anything to soften rough callouses.

Be careful the elbows dont turn into lick granuloma .

Thank you all for the great advice.  I can not tell you all how much I appreciate it.  Her bed is a thick furniture blanket folded in half on an area rug, so she has nice padding.  She does not like really soft padded beds.  I think she gets to stiff from sinking into them and and then has a hard time getting up :) .  I will give these suggestions a try.

Thank you all again
