I was reading on a different dog forum where the participants put up lists of what dogs they would love to own if money, time, temperament, space, rarity, etc. wasn't a barrier.  I know we all tend to be attached to particular breeds for their aptitude at different kinds of work, or because of how well they fit with our personalities and lifestyles.  What would you own if there were no limitations?

My list (in no particular order) was a bit of a revelation:
(1) Tamaskan or Utonagan (Since these aren't fully established breeds I don't count them as separate)
(2) Belgian shepherd
(3) Altdeutscher Shäferhund
(4) Scottish deerhound
(5) Berger Picard
(6) Dutch shepherd
(7) Czech wolfdog
(8) Collie (Rough or Smooth)

Based on what I would really like but don't find practical (with the exception of the Belgian shepherd and Collie, which I may end up with at some point), it's really not a surprise that I'm so happy with German shepherds.  They're not exotic, but they've got everything I want from a dog in a readily obtainable package.

Czech wolfdog,it is Czechoslovakian wolfhound and actually it is Slovakian national breed not Czech breed.

My apologies cage, but they actually are called Czechoslovakian wolfdog here in the "official" breed books, so that's the name I was using.  I know wikipedia's not the world's best source, but here's their article on the breed. Is it possible you're thinking of a different breed that I'm not familiar with? Dogs that look like wolves are popular (there's the Sarloos and the Kunming as well).

Interesting choices for the rest of you. I love Irish wolfhounds myself, but wouldn't have one because they live such a short time. It's bad enough that my last GSD only made it to 13 (even though I know this isn't an unreasonable age) -- I don't think I could handle getting a dog that you can expect to pass away aged 8-10.

http://www.wolfdog.org/eng/44.html There are Czech Wolfdogs. A Czech dog and a Carpathian wolf were breed.I posted the link to the site. I would for sure have one of them in a heart beat.I've been researching breeders and I think I found one that I like.Too bad they are in Poland!!
Other breeds....besides a German Shepherd and Wolfdog...
1 Irish Wolfhound
2 Malamute (I saw a few  on FB Save a Dog for adoption and they are  just beautiful!!)
3 Malinois (but reallllly picky about where I would get it from)

After training so many dogs and different breeds...there are now many that i know I wouldn't have.lol
And to think that when I was a kid I loved them all....even the little ones.

Those Irish Wolfhounds are huge! My neighbor has one, her second recently died of bone cancer. I thought they were hardier dogs but she is always worrying about them in hot weather. Their coats need constant care to keep from mats. Her breeder only does C-sections, I guess stillborns are a problem with the breed sometimes. (The age thing gets me too, the older I get the heartbreaks seem to get worse.) Watching a German Shepherd run with galloping Wolfhounds sure is a fun thing to watch, though.

I'm not a small dog fan (yap dogs), but if I did get a toy breed, I'd like a yorkie. We had a yorkie come in to the vet to board on a regular basis, and she was SO full of personality, we used to joke we were going to kidnap her!  That was over 35 years ago, and I can still remember her name. Thats how big an impression she made on me! She was called Tiffany.

I'd love to have a collie, but that was before I realized how badly the show people had screwed them up.  :-(  Maybe some day, I'll have a hobby farm, and get a border collie and some sheep...

The Beauceron sounds like an interesting dog, with the herding and protection instincts of the GSD. It hasn't been recognized long enough for the show people to mess it up, either. Wouldn't mind getting one of them some day.

I have an e-friend who breeds cardigan welsh corgis, and if it weren't for the fact we get such deep snow here, I'd be tempted to purchase one. They're a big dog with short legs, and have great personalities.

I also have a lot of respect for schnauzers, both mini and giant, and for bouviers.  I think the pharaoh dog is really cool, too, but I'm not tempted to get a dog that wouldn't be able to handle the Candian climate in winter. I'm not into dog coats and dog sweaters!

My mom has had a couple of English springer spaniels, and I think they're very nice dogs, too, if you don't mind the grooming.

Sunsilver- I too am not a small dog fan but there have been the few that I have liked. My friend here has 2 Papillions. They are so sweet....yappy but sweet. If you ever want a Yorkie Another friend I have(in IL) has one...well I guess he is her mom's but she did all the training and he is a great little guy.He can hang with the big dogs. I do agree that the Collie have been messed up.You would have to go to Scotland to get one that hasn't been. One that is still used for hearding not just to run around a ring and look pretty. If you are in Canada sounds like you need a Malamute for as cold as it gets there.lol Although a German Shepherd can handle it too.My guy pants when it is freezing out!! He loves to roll in the snow and just lay there.
I use to want a Borzoi.Thought it would be cool to have it run along side me if I went horseback riding.Have only met a few nice ones.I think they too have been messed up from what they are supose to be like. In all I think for now i will stick to the German Shepherd.Although if a wolfdog comes my way or a nice malamute...I might just have to say ok to it.
