I have a 9 week ole female GSD that does well when she 's in her crate  at night, and off and on throughout the day when we are home.  The problem we have is she is not usong the puppy pads that we lay out while we are at work. Right now she has her open crate and about 10 -15 sq. feet around her. Should we make the area smaller while we are at work?? Any tips would be appreciated. We don't want to put her outside just yet, because we are concerned about someone stealing her.

For starters I wouldn't get her use to peeing on pads.Have ther learn that she has to go outside. When you are away to work is there a pet sitter or a friend that could let her out mid day? That would be ideal and don't give her so much room.It isn't being crule if you crate her while you are gone. Most likely she is sleeping anyway.Just give her some toys that are safe for her to be with. I wouldn't leave her out when you aren't home for sure!!! As soon as you get home though out the door to go potty!!! All the GSDs i have had as pups were house broke a week after I got them.Make sure you stick to a schedule and even if she wakes you up at 3am get up and let her out!! That is good if she is letting you know.Hope some of that helped.

And praise her when she goes outside.

I say, definately do not use the pee pads.  That is just like telling her that it is okay to go to the bathroom in the house.  NO, NO.  Keep on a schedule.  Get a dog  walker if needed when you can' t be home while at work or a neighbor.  JMTC

Ok......we will stop the pads now. I will come home from work mid-day to take her out. She should not be locked up in her crate for more than to three hours at a time. She can be in her crate at night for up to 4-4 1/2 before she lets me know she needs to go outside. What is the age and what is the maximum time a dog should spend in a crate, especially during aour work hours. We leave at 8:15 AM and someone is usually home by 1:30PM, and I will be doing a mid- day for the next couple of weeks. I hope she will be trained by then. When she is fully trained would it be ok to leave her in a larger area.................................what age...approx.??

1hr per month in age .That is what I have some up with, but if she is able to fo 4 hrs at night then you should be good coming home mid day. Some breeds are different(small dogs) but all the GSDs I have had or raised as a pup that is what they are usually able to handle. It helps to pull up their water if you aren't going to be there to wach for signals of having to go out.
You can't tell on age of when you will be able to give her more room it is when she has the idea she is to go outside and you are able to leave her for longer periods(and she is clean) then you can give her more room.Obviously as she grows give her more room in the crate...but don't rush it.You want her to be successful and have a good outcome. So yes when she really is knowing not to go in the house...then yes she could have more room.
