With all the excellent breeders and knowledge here, I am sure someone can answer my question. What should I do if anything, for ears that tip backwards? Just the very tips kinda roll backwards. The entire ear is strong and is up straight. It kinda seems like the pup is using his ears almost too good. He is 3 1/2 mos old and is a very stout and heavy bone pup. I realize that is he still young and this may correct itself. However, never having had this problem or known anyone who did, I was just wondering if I should do anything to help correct it or not. I would hate it if they wouldn't correct themselves and there was something I should have done to correct it.

It's too early to worry about it. They often tip back for periods of time. Give him something to chew on to strengthen his jaw muscles and don't worry about it.

I had a pup with ears like this. LOL, drove me nuts, but the breeder said not to worry, the ears would be gorgeous. They came up at 4 months of age, and the breeder was right - the ears are perfect. It was definitely weird. I didn't do anything to them; they came up on their own.
I do know that some people supplement with Vitamin C; I don't know about this...unlike humans, dogs can synthesize the Vitamin C they need. The people who supplement with it say that it helps in collagen development and will help ears, and since it's a water-soluble vitamin they will just excrete any excessive amounts. I am NOT recommending Vitamin C supplements to you; just giving you information I've read about, as I know people swear by it for help with ears and hips.
Good luck with your puppy!

My homebred Timo Berrekasten-daughter Winni vom Silbersee had very strong ears with tips bent backwards like that. The ears were up at 12 weeks of age and never came down again during teething. She was titled, breed surveyed (KKL1) and got a V-2 rating. None of the judges ever criticized her ears.
If you look closely, you can even see it on her photo here: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/347924.html
So, I would not worry about that.

I also had a dog with ears like that once when he was a pup. It looked like he had square ears because you couldn't see the tips.

I think those are later signs of firm good sets of ears after they're just erected . All puppied i've dealt/encountered with such ear turned out with excellent ear set. My present bitch had the same ears when she was about the same age, and now, her ear could sell anywhere as a perfect gsd ears. It's like ur a "jolly just come" about gsds?

Thanks everyone for the input on our ears. I kinda felt that it was nothing to worry about. But hearing it from someone who has been through it makes me feel better. I'll try to post a pic of him soon. Thanks again from all of you. I have renewed faith that some members are truly here for the love of the breed.....and to help!!!
