Sometimes it's productive to target a few specific dogs and research each of them in depth. There's no single source for a large quanity of producers that I can think of for german workinglines, but would be pretty nice if there were. Here's a weblink that lightly details a few nice ones http://www.vomtauglichkeit.com/german-shepherd-studs.html

Is he stable? Does he take advantage of the handler?
Number of males vs. females in his litters, ear faults, testical faults, and dentition faults in his progenies
His drives? Which drives he has and are they balanced?
Does linebreeding to this particular studs leads to weak progenies at any level?
The pups he sired are smarter or stupider?
The sutd is half of the equation but they are sometimes recommended for passing certian traits to their litters, such as, better hips, traninability, pigment, etc.................
Here are a few studs to get started, if you know anything about any of them please mention it:
Tom van't Leefdaalhof
Orry von Haus Antverpa
Troll von der bösen Nachbarschaft
Fero vom Zeuterner Himmelreich
Don vom Clausberg
Tino vom Felsenschloß
Ernst vom Weinbergblick
Asko von der Lutter
Gent od policie
If you like any others studs not mentioned, list them please!

These are all dogs I look for in pedigrees. All strong dogs that could and have been line bred on to improve any trait needed without a negative influence. IMO Berndt was the best gsd period and produced great dogs.
The only dog I listed that does not go to Bernd as far as it can be traced is Arys z Travnickova Dvora

Not having any direct contacts with European breeders/owners I've based much of my own opinions on dogs I've noticed repeatedly in the background of dogs I like, or that people I respect seem to like. (Unfortunately I'm looking @ working lines, but my own background is in conformation so all I can look at is videos, photos and competition scores) Amoung the dogs I seem to keep coming back to in pedigrees are:
Tom van't Leefdaalhof www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/388354.html
V Yoschy von der Döllenwiese www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/13891.html
Ufo van Guy's Hof www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/127683.html
V Falk von den Wölfen www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/123666.html
same can be said for a couple of bitches....
