Looking to connect with those who are running K-9's for detection or other aspects of law enforcement in jails/prisons.

I work at a local jail and we are trying to come up with better ways to use our K-9.  We built a barrier to have the K-9 search inmates returning back to the jail but are looking into the regulations and laws for this.  Does anyone know the legality of having a K-9 search, using a barrier so the dog can't see them and they can't see the dog, prisoners, employee's and visitors?

What about using a K-9 for riots or other venues were a K-9 may be deployed using force inside a jail/prison?

Please e-mail me at:  schmalzk9@yahoo.com  or pm me to help with answers and contact information.  My agency is trying to move forward in our K-9 program inside our jail and I was asked to locate some agencies that may be of help with our goals.

Thanks

Here in WV the prisons we use them for drug and contraband searches, also have trailing and tracking dogs for escapes, also use dogs for controll of inmates if needed. I think the jails use the prison dogs if needed. I doubt they can afford any theirselves.

Where I am located K9's are used in the jails for detection of narcotics and cell phones.  Dogs are commonly used for passive indication of narcotics on inmates.  K9's are also used for riot control.  Here they don't seperate the passive dogs from the inmates just walk the dogs by them.  Obviously, different rules for search and seizure in the jail or prisons.

Thanks to those who have either e-mailed me or wrote something on this board.

Wrestleman and Slamdunc could you please e-mail or pm me with a contact of prison or jail K-9 Officer or administrator that I may be able to talk with.  Thank you.

Slamdunc is the jail near you using pointy ear dogs or floppy ear dogs and what is the reason they are not using a barrier?  I know the rules are different but using a dog without a barrier just seems like they are setting themselves up for a law suit if one of their passive dogs gets frustrated and reverts back to an aggressive indication.

I would really like to talk with someone from this jail and figure out how they are doing this without any problems.

Thanks

Rob
