Is it possible for a bitch to start her estrous cycle and not finish it?

2nd Q, During the estrous cycle, won't the bitch ALWAYS let the male know when she is ready(Lifting up her tail?)

On previous estrous cyles with my bitch it was obvious when she was on her cyle and when she was ready to breed.  Unfortunately this time around I can not comprehend what's going on.

My girl will spot and flag for a week, then no spotting and no flagging for a week, then she will spot again usually for another week. It's that middle week that you really have to be careful she may seem to be out but watch out... Prime Time!

Last time she stopped her heat cycle on day 22 (stopped spotting, and boy stopped paying attention) and we had a scare when I let my boy and her play on day 28... yep they had a tie... I personally think he raped her, but who knows she could have still been in cycle. It can happen quicker than you can react. Some can have really short cycles, some can have really long cycles. If it last more than 4-5 weeks you might want to check with vet.

I have seen females that have silent heat... no sign except male will be bonkers, and the female may or may not be receptive. Tail flagging is not always a sign that they are in prime heat. Usually it comes at the beginning of the heat cycle, and is not always done.

Is her food and conditions the same? Is it the same male? Certain changes might account for the changes you see. Have you checked the hormone levels?
