Shelley you are one brave women. I grew up with blizzards and snow, but I have a fear of being stranded. Make sure you have plenty of water and powerbars just in case. If you get stuck please give us a shout and someone will find you, I am sure of that. Take care

What I wouldn't give for my old Class C motorhome for this trip. Now THAT was the was to enjoy travel acorss this country! Tired of driving? Bad weather coming in? No problem. Pull ove in a rest area, turn on the generator, throw a decent movie in the disc player, make something good and hot to eat,, and have a nice rest in your very own bed till the wather straightened up to where you could move on.

Funny- Distance tends to equate to Time, and Time is the universal healing agent, so (to me at least) the farther I travel, the more time seems to have elapsed, and the more healed I feel. Does that make any sense at all?
Its the reason I came back East in the first place, ten years ago, and now the reason I am going back West now.

The only difference is that I came East with a 26' moving van and a huge trailer over-loaded with kennels and equipt. I return with... what will fit in the van around the dogs.
Hmmmmm...

An update on the weather......Tuesday morning Dec. 22

Where ever you end up driving in the next 3-4 days, be sure you are south, not to the mid-west, and forget trying to come across I-40 in NM for the moment. 

A potent winter storm is about to hit. It is highly likely that blizzard conditions will exist in broad areas, probably at least on Wednesday, possibly into Thursday. There will be wide spread snow, from the middle of NM and TX north through most of the central plains, KS, NE and probably all of CO. So this is not a time to be driving across plains areas.

It does not sound like you are leaving anytime soon, but if you are, just take heed of weather reports everywhere you go for the route you intend to travel. The wind chills too will make for bitter cold, well below zero in most areas. 

Our snow should start early this evening, or perhaps as early as later in the afternoon. This storm has abundant moisture and cold air mixing, so could be a very significant snow for many areas.

I was supposed to go to Flagstaff, Sedona area for Christmas and New Yeas.  I have friends who live in Willams AZ near i-40 (old route 66) and that area gets 99 inches of snow and has an alpine climate.!!!!  Sadly, I have changed my plans.  It has been too long since I have driven in the snow.  It is 55 degrees Farenheit here and I think that's cold.  I am such a sissy.

Hopefully, I will sell my house and when it goes into escrow, I can take the trip.

Thanks for the weather updates. The holiday is already playing heck with my plans, might as well let ithe weather have its week too.
The good news is that one storm that the forecast for the rest of this week HERE has improved. Looks like the rest of the country is going to get hammered though. I have a lot to do before I can take off, starting with getting to Manassas. I put an ad for a ride on Craiglist today. Maybe someone will be going my way for Christmas. If I had planned better I would have posted notices at the local colleges, but most of the students are long gone by now.

Still, delays notwithstanding, I am very excited about getting back to the land of sunshine and year-round dog training.
We're gonna make it. By this time next year Xena will be addicted to fish tacos and sushi. ;-D
