German Shepherds havent made the list of banned breeds on military bases yet, but do you think one day they might?? My fiance was thinking about going into the military but I would be afraid the might add them to the list. I know GSDs have been named on some banned lists, but surely the military wouldnt go this far....not when GSDs are saving lives everyday!! And have been for a century.

JUST MORE PROOF WHY DINKIEDOODLES ARE THE DOG OF THE FUTURE.  YOU WONT SEE DINKIEDOODLES ON ANY BANNED LIST.

RIGHT! The breeds on the list are...

Pitbull,Rotties,Dobies,Chows, and Wolfdogs....These breeds are considered "agressive or potentially agressive."  You cant even own a mix of one of these breeds.

I think this is stupid and they should concentrate their efferots on banning stupid people lol ;) They would get good results faster lol

I can name at least one base that bans GSDs.

That base also bans Huskies/Malamutes, Dobes, Rotts, Chows, Wolfdogs, Bully Breeds (ie. anything that looks like a pitbull or boxer) and anything mixed with the "dangerous breeds." Do people still have them? Yep. I think it's stupid; the most dangerous dogs I've ever met on any base housing were psychotic little ratdogs, the "oh, he's small he's harmless" types let loose in the yard that bark and snap at anyone walking past. You know the type: little dogs that their owners don't believe need training in basic manners.

I understand that these breeds are being overbred and there are becoming more and more behavioral issues...but on the other hand lets not forget....

My biggest problem would be going into the military in the first place.
High unemployment is the recruiters best friend and sadly seems to be working very well.
Once your there they can do pretty much whatever they want.   Try fighting it.

In my area, there are several large military bases. While I do not know specifically whether breed bans are in effect now or may be considered in the future, I can say that the military experiences a huge problem with families bringing dogs onto base housing and not taking care of the dogs. One high ranking officer who is my client tells me how so many let their dogs run loose, how fencing is often completely inadequate, how often deployed personnel leave dogs with people, including spouses who are incapable of caring for the dog, how few of the dogs are trained, etc. etc. He is also in charge of the units responsible for keeping order on base and says they waste an inordinate amount of time looking into dog complaints.

I also see the results in multiple phone calls and emails from military personnel looking to dump their dog when they are deployed, moving to a new station, or just don't want the dog. So bottom line is that the military experiences the same kinds of irresponsible behavior as does civilian society when it comes to dogs.

Unfortunately, I would have to say I wouldn't sell a puppy to someone in the military. Nothing against the serviceperson, but all that constant relocating and uncertainty...and I can't say I think the base housing is fantastic. Most of the time the yards are unfenced. I dunno. I guess I think the person should hold off and get a dog when he/she is in a permanent situation.
