As we approach Christmas, many organizations dedicated to helping the less fortunate are struggling to make their goals of being able to help those less fortunate this season. One such organization, in my area, is "Toys for Tots", a Marine Corp program many years old that collects toys for children who may not otherwise get anything under the tree this week. Another organization struggling in my area is the Salvation Army. I would like to suggest that all of us who have more than others take the opportunity to give this season in some small way. Who knows, life sometimes brings surprises and any one of us can end up in a position needing help at some time in our life. Even dropping a dollar or two into a collection bucket, or buying a $5 toy and placing it in a collection bin, or taking some toiletries to your local homeless shelter can brighten a day for someone less fortunate. Another way to make a difference is to donate to a group that provides a goat or a cow or a chicken to someone in some poor country around the world. Regardless of one's religion, the spirit of this season should remind us that we are all members of the human race and that many are needy.

Merry Christmas and may your hearts be big this year and every year.

Very well said Hodie. My daughters school just had a fundraiser for the program you mentioned. I can't remember the name off hand, but they raised money to donate farm animals to poor countries. We also have a local program where you pick a family, and donate items that they need. Most are very basic items. Toys for children, coats, etc.  It is sad though that it takes the xmas season to bring out kindness in people. With the economy the way it is there are many more people in need this year. Things we take for granted, such as basic toiletries, heat, and a roof over our heads have been lost by many.

  Merry Christmas!

Well said.  There are so many things we can do to help.  One thing I do with my nieces each year is make up treat bags, candy, lotion, shampoo, candy canesand take them to the local soup kitchen.  My nieces helped serve dinner and hand out the bags on 2 occassions.  Last year we were unable to help as my mother was in hospice care at my house.

Hodie, thank you for the reminder as it completely slipped my mind this year.  I will be sure to pick up some supplies and make arrangements to get them over so they can be handed out on Christmas.  The people are very appreciative of the treats/

I also wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Toys for Tots in my area, Wichita, Ks. was recently broken into and thousands of dollars worth of toys were stolen.  In spite of the hard times many have suffered in the aircraft layoffs around here, more toys and cash donations poured in and they now have more than what they started with.

I can't pass the bell ringers without putting something in the bucket (same thing with the firemen's boots on Labor Day).  I have been more generous with my tips also.  My husband & I decided that our new roof was gift enough this season so we have been able to help others more.  Somehow, it feels better than having a gift under the tree.

Good suggestions Hodie.  I hope everyone that is able to donate in some way does so.
Good post.

This year I worked for my friend who has a store on EBay.  I made quite a big in the month that I worked.  I made a donation to a friend's rescue.  I also bought jackets for some kids I knew in need of them.  When it snowed here they were standing outside waiting on the schoolbus wearing sweatshirt jackets.  I had planned on getting a few gifts for our local Angel Tree but when my friend told me that and gave me sizes I immediately went the day before Thanksgiving. I also had a working computer and several extra parts--like a scanner, 3 mouses and an extra keyboard.  I gave them to a man who redoes puters out of his pocket for low income people.  I only wish I could have done more.  Thanks Hodie for bringing it up.

 Vonissk,

That is really cool that you were able to help in some way. If everyone would do something once in a while, it would be a different world. I am sure those who benefitted from your help really appreciate it. I am sure you also feel good about doing this and that is your reward!

It does make you feel good to help someone else.  I am a very blessed person and I have people that help me so the only logical thing to do is give back something.  I believe even something as simple as giving someone a ride or running an errand for them............if you ride public transportation to work--which I did for many years--giving up your seat to an elderly person or pregnant lady...........It only takes an extra sec or two to be nice, to say Good Morning, to give someone a direction, to put your change in the kettle.  Not only does it make you feel good it will all come back to you.
