If anyone has a really good dog clipper of the professional variety, I am in dire need of same. I have a rescue dog here, a stray, some sort of a spaniel,  who looks more like a wooly mammoth at the moment. I cannot use scissors to clip him. My hands are simply too arthritic anymore to do this clipping by scissor. Even the largest pair won't cut through his mats etc. My vet gave me a clipper, but it is too old and too dull to do the trick and overheats in two minutes.  I cannot afford to buy an expensive clipper, so if anyone has one sitting around unused and unwanted, and is willing to donate it, I would be very grateful. I would even return it if you wished and pay for postage.

Thank you.

Hey Hodie,
I am a professional dog groomer and if you only have one dog who needs to be shaved down, you can get a cheap pair of clippers anywhere (Walmart, Petsmart). Probably right around $20- $30. There are also cooling lubricant sprays that will keep the blade nice and cool.
I definitely wouldn't recommend cutting the mats out with scissors.
good luck getting him a new home!
If you need any help don't hesitate to ask :-)

 Stacy,

Thank you for the suggestion. Actually, I have tried the suggestion you made and the clippers are simply not good enough. This is a dog who I have had now for almost three years. He was "dropped off" here late at night and had I not kept him, the blizzard the next day surely would have killed him. I just never had the heart to send him to the shelter and of course, no one was looking for him. He is older and no trouble except he is trouble in the grooming area and I just cannot do it anymore with the scissors.

Thank you for responding. I will hope someone has a really good clipper. The really good ones I know are terribly expensive.

Hodie if you can afford about 65 Andis makes a pair called pet clippers.  They come in a plastic storage box with all sorts of combs and have a #10 blade attached.  Also the blades snap on and off as do the higher priced clippers.  Don't let the pet clipper name fool you.  I was a groomer for 25 yrs. and I will put these up against any of the higher priced ones. I have a pair now I have had for about 6 yrs and I groom out of my home part time and these are all I use. As Stacy said you can get the spray coolant--one brand name is Kool Lube and it will keep the blades from getting hot.

Hi Vonissk,

Can't afford that now, but will keep it in mind for when I can. And thanks again to you and Stacy for the suggestion.

Show cockers cannot be cut with a cheap pair of clippers if they are matted... I know   been doing them for 36 yrs...you cant even get down the back with a cheap pair....Show cockers have more hair than a sheep and most have a cotton coat...here is a pic of my biggest male  already in show cut...once in a while i goof and let them get nasty and matted to an extent...I use the three pair of $189.00 Oster   two speed with #10 blades to get 5 cockers sheared  and I do it when they are dirty not clean...dirty hair cuts better for me on the show cockers I have than clean hair....

Kool Blade gets you thru but most people have never had full heavy show cockers to contend wih....

These two are cut in a partial show cut and one clipper would make it..they have not matted...Maggie has silkey coat, Sara has thick cotton coat..hard to get thru

Bunco has inbetween but much thicker than Maggie his sister...So it depends on the dog  , as to how the clippers act..Andis is used by most professionals today....I use Andis blades in my Oster heavy duty clippers but  have never been able to even get a cheaper pair even half way down the back on my cockers..Matted forget even the attempt. I dropped my newest Oster clippers on the kitchen floor and now they are unbalanced..Off to Oster to get repaired ..always something...

Hodie:

If you have anyone near you that has sheep   Sunbeam made a pair of Sheep shears ...and they work..For years I had a pair and some crook I knew stole them and took them to the flea market in Conroe and sold them.....I was so furious as they work and have one strong motor to get all that thick matting off.. in a hurry   and not get so hot....

Maybe the Feed store has a pair of Sheep shears  you could borrow or know someone with a pair..

Thanks Sitasmom..they are hard to keep pretty and the hair is thicker than sheep hair....I have always tried to keep them in good condition but several times did not and I was beside myself to get it off...My back and my arms and the poor cockers were worn out when I finally get them sheared down...I keep them short now..

Thanks YR, I will try the feed store to ask if they know of someone with sheep sheers. Yes, this dog gets mats that cannot be cut through and even the best and most expensive clippers I have borrowed in the past will not allow me to do more than perhaps a quarter of his coat. Someone dumped this dog and boy, though he is a sweet little guy, he is too much for me grooming wise. I would NEVER own this breed, just because of the grooming issue. I could ask a groomer around here to volunteer and come take care of him, but in our area, far too few are careful about the disinfection and I fear more problems than it is worth.

Anyway, thanks to all for the ideas.

Hodie,
Send me your address and I will send you an Osters A5, extra, I have, and a #10 blade, just sharpened...I have about 3 or 4 of them. It may need brushes and springs shortly, but those are easy to get done, they will work for the one dog.....I used to be a dog groomer and have some extras laying around...they are older but will still work...I do use them on occasion on some of these long coats I have to shave down like the Chewy dog and my horses bridlepaths....
